Kings Mountain hopes to have its flow and treatment problems corrected by July 1. Photo by Darrin Griggs Tax Rate Will Drop Cleveland County residents got some good news and bad news from County Commissioners at their monthly meeting Monday in Shelby. The good news is that commis- sioners said they intend to lower the property tax rate by 15 cents per $100 valuation. The bad news is that, because of the recent reappraisal of property which is required every eight years, that your tax bill will be higher. County Manager Joe Hendrick suggested that the tax rate be lowered from the current 69 cents per $100 to 54 .cents. However, he said, that the average property increase in last year’s revaluation amounted to 31 percent, so the average tax- payers bill (estimated on a pro- perty valuation of $50,000) would increase by about $8.50. Commissioners have set a June 20 public hearing on the pro- posed budget. The budget must be approved by July 1. A 1977 graduate of Chase High School, Hopper earned an Assoicate’s degree from Isothermal Com- munity College in 1979. He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in elementary education from Gardner-Webb College. He received his certification in ad- ministration from Gardner- Webb in 1987. In other matters, Dr. Robert McRae, superintendent, an- nounced that 61.5 percent of this year’s KMSHS graduates are planning to further their educa- Kings Mountain Getting Dry From Page 1-A Gibson said it would take a rain of one inch or more and then weekly rains to affect area crops significantly. Local farmer Jack Scism said his cottom crop has been hurt by the drought and heat, but will probably survive. He quit plan- ting soybens two or three weeks ago because the seeds will not germinate in the dry, hot soil. Scism has 180 acres set aside for soybeans, and can resume plan- ting them until the first of July if the weather improves, he said. Kings Mountain dairy farmer William Plonk said his corn crop is suffering because of the weather. The corn grown now is used for feed later in the year. If there is not a good crop, and hay has to be shipped in this fall, some dairy farmers will have to cut back and sell some of their cows, Plonk said. 3 According to local weather statistician Kenneth Kitzmiller, 12.68 inches of rain has fallen on Kings Mountain so far this year. Through June last year 22.14 in- ches of rain fell. tion at either two-year or four- year institutions. That is a 15 per- cent increase over what is typical at the high school, McRae said. “It’s a figure we should be happy with,” he told the board. “It’s a dramatic swing in the right direction.” e The board gave permission for Kathy James and Barbara Jones to hold another tennis camp at the high school courts during the week of June 20-24. e The Dixon Odom & Co. of Charlotte was approved by the board as the school district’s auditor for 1988-89. » The board approved support for House Bill 970, a bill that would allow schools to takes bids from a general contractor for .| construction projects instead of taking separate bids for all aspects of the project. The general contractor would be allowed to sub-contract for other work. e The board approved revised discipline policies. The-revision was done to make sure policies - and procedures were in line with dur process procedure, McRae said. School administrators will become more familiar with the revised policies lateer during the summer retreat, he said. oe The board heard the first reading of policy DIC--a policy that would require the schools to take an iventory of all fixed assets of $300 or more. ¢ The board approved a Kings Mountain High School Band Trip to Florida. : e The board approved re- questing the county commission to set the district supplemental tax rate at 17 cents per $100. This would generate over $820,000 for the schools -- nearly the same as last year’s tax rate of 20 cents. The board approved all student transfers, and all staff retirements, resignations, leave of absence requests, and transfers. Connie Phifer From Page 1-A Ms. Phifer learned about the exchange program through North Principal Jane King. ‘She told me she thought I needed to apply,” Ms. Phifer said. “I deliberated about it for five or six months and finally mailed it in last October. I had an interview in Chapel Hill and then forgot about it until about March. I was stun- ned when I found out that I had been selected. I didn’t know I had the experiences and academic needs that they would want.” The program was established in 1946 under legislation introduc- ed by former Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas.
