t \ i \ i \ | ATE ye Page 12C-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, July 20, 1988 Kings Mountain Students Study In Switzerland, Belgium Jonathan Bruce Summey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Summey of Kings Mountain, is in Zurich, Switzerland as an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student. He traveled by train to Zofingen, to a student hostel where he studied the. German language for two weeks with students from all over the world (his best friend was from Iceland!). Following the German language study, Jon’s family, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Abbuehl, picked him up and took him to their home in Neiderscherli. The father is a methematics in- structor and the mother is a part- time music t teacher and . housewife. He as two sisters. : Katrin (age 18) “has studied SUMMEY violin in Italy and will join them for their sum- mer holiday on Lake of Brienz near Interlaken. Suzanne (age 20) will return home from Lakewood, California, on July 26. She has been an AFS student for the past year. Each member of this family speaks four languages: German, French, Italian, and English. It is a very musical family. The father’s favorite pastime is sail- ing so that is how Jon will pass the summer holiday too. The name of their summer home is Edelweiss. He will be spending five weeks with the family and then he will be involv- ed in a cultural or environmental study with a hike or bicycle trip through the Alps. He will return to the student hostel for a week to share his experiences with the other AFS students. Jon is a senior at Kings Moun- tain High School where he is a member of various school organizations including Beta Club, French Club, Chorale and Kings revue. His address: Jon B. Summey, c/o Fam. Muench of Kings Mountain left June 22 for Gullegem, Belgium (suburb of Kortrijk). He attend- ed a language and culture orien- tation for a couple of days outside Brussels before being picked up by his family, His Belgium father is a bank manager, who in his leisure time likes to read philosophy books and take long walks. His mother is a homemaker who helps her hus- band in the bank. Jeff is one of seven children in the family ranging in age from 5 to 22 (2 girls and 5 boys). They speak Flemish, English, and French. He says his 5 year old brother, Floris, speaks only Flemish; even though they can not under- dant each other in words it Watson Elected To Board Patsy Watson, a teacher assis- tant from the New Hanover County School System, was elected July 5th to serve on the NEA Board of Directors for a one year term. She was elected by her fellow delegates at the Na- tional Education Association Convention held in New Orleans July 2-7. Lag The NEA con- vention, attend- led by 8,229 idelegates representing 1.9 million educators, meets annually to discuss the . needs of public WATSON education, con- vention goals and resolutions. Elections are reflective of the beliefs of educators today. Teacher assistants and educa- tional support personnel (ESP) was first organized in Wilm- ington by Patsy Watson four years ago. Since that time Ms. Watson served as president of the New Hanover Co. Teacher Assistant Asso. for two years and has served as chairman of the state NCAE/ESP Commission for the past three years. North Carolina’s membership has grown from 300 to over 2400. Wat- son was elected Mid-Atlantic Director of the NEA-ESP Caucus in 1986. She will also serve as a director on the North Carolina Association of Educators Board during the coming year. Ms. Watson is employed as a first grade teacher assistant at Forest Hills School in Wilm- ington. She is married to C.B. Watson and is the mother of Chuck and Twyla Watson. Ms. Watson was guest speaker earlier in the year at a meeting for teacher assistants from Kings Mountain, Shelby and Gastonia. doesn’t matter as they still engage in horseplay as brothers do. He traveled by train to Antwerp with his 17 year old sister, Hermelinde, to see her boarding school (she : | boards with an Antwerp family) MUENCH and to attend a Flemish play. He then took a train from Antwerp to Ghent where he was met by his family (who had doctors appointments in Ghent). During the first days in July, the Laga family had two boys from Finland visiting for a week; the boys were with a Finnish Band and Gullegem hosted a band camp. All the Laga children play band instruments and piano. The Lagas listen to music as well as play it; they like to read, attend ballet, concerts and tour. They watch very little TV. Jeff enjoys long talks with his 22 year old brother, Wouter. Another Laga son, Mattias, is an AF'S stu- dent in Seattle and will return home in mid-July. Jeff will be on the staff at a Christian Community church camp in the Ardennes for twelve days during the month of July. Jeff’s permanent Belgium ad- dress is: Jeffrey E. He attended Hugh O’Brien Leadership Presidential classroom and was Conference,’ elected 2nd Vice President this past summer at North Carolina Governor’s School East. He is ac- tive in the High School Chorale, Boy Scouts, French Club, Beta Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, S.P.O., Pep Club and will be school mascot along with Jon Summey next year. Both boys would love letters. It will take about five days (sent Air Mail) for letters to reach them. : AFS students are selected because of their high academic ability, their desire to participate in an intense educational ex- perience, their personal maturi- ty, and their ability to be our am- bassadors abroad.
