Obituaries GARY HEFFNER Graveside services for Gary Wilburn Heffner, 67, of Meadowbrook Manor, Shelby, who died Thursday in Cleveland Memorial Hospital, were con- ducted Saturday at 11 a.m. from Cleveland Memorial Park by Rev. James Sanders. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Addie Washington and Jesse Mae Rip- py Heffner. He was a self carpenter and was husband of the late Shirley Har- din Heffner. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, Pacific Theater. Survivors include six sons, Gary Heffner, Jr., Eddie Heff- ner, Dale Heffner and Jeff Heff- ner, all of Shelby, David Heffner of Kings Mountain and Dane Hef- fner of Lincolnton; two brothers, Charles Heffner of Anderson, S.C. and Burl Heffner of Washington, D.C. and 11 grand- children. : DESSIE COX Funeral services for Dessie Palmer Roberts Cox, 83, of 1870 E. Marion St., Shelby, former Bethware, Grover and Elizabeth Elementary School teacher, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from Elizabeth Baptist Church of which she was a member. Rev. Jeff Brendle officiated at the rites and interment was in the church cemetery. A native of Cleveland County, Mrs. Cox had taught in the Kings Mountain and Cleveland County school system for 43 years. She was a graduate of Appalachian State University and Vanderbilt University. Her parents were the late Samuel Lester and Ella Jane Kendrick Roberts. Her husband was the late George Carl Cox. Surviving are two sons, Gene C. Cox of Boiling Springs and Carl Lester Cox of Los Angeles; a brother, Ralph E. Roberts of Spartanburg, S.C., a sister, Edith R. Jones of Shelby; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Mission Fund of Elizabeth Bap- tist Church, Shelby 28150. JOE PATTERSON Funeral services for Joe Wade Patterson, 37, of 435 Edwin St., Gastonia, who died Sunday at home, were conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. from St. Titus AME «Zion Church by Rev. Evelyn ‘Beard, Rev. Pruella Kilgore and Rev. Walter Adams. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Bessie Johnson Patterson of Gastonia and the late Lewis Patterson. In addition to his mother, he is survived by four sons, Joel Pat- terson, Lewis Patterson, Jeremiah Patterson and Dwan Hall of Gastonia; a daughter, Tif- fany Patterson of Gastonia; and two brothers, 1st Sgt. Dwight A. Patterson of Fort Campbell, Ky. and Roy Lee Patterson of Alabama. HOWARD CHAMPION Funeral services for Howard C. Champion, 27, of Route 1, Ponder Road, Grover, who died July 27 at home, were conduc- tued Friday at 2 p.m. from the Salvation Army by Lt. Wayne and Coleen Richardson and Capt. Jesse Jones, interment following in Cleveland Memorial Park, Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was employed with Doran Mill and was a member of the Salvation Army. He had served three years as first lieutenant with the Number Three Fire Department. : J He is survived by his wife, Mary Carol Collins Champion; his mother and stepfather, Peggy Champion Vess and Walter Dewitt Vess of Grover; grandfather, John K. Hawkins of Shelby; two brothers, William Hawkins of Hickory and Jerry Vess of the home; and three sisters, Peggy H. Rich of Casar, Angelia H. Cooper of Grover and Bernice H. Heidreth of Hickory. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army. QUINSHONE CROCKER Graveside services for Quin- shone Antwan Crocker, infant son of Travis and Vanessa Payseur Crocker, were held Frri- day at 11 a.m. from Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Grover by Rev. James Smith. The baby died July 27 in Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Surviving, in addition to the parents, are the Srpninarenis, James and Diane Crocker and Lamar and Barbara Payseur, all of Kings Mountain. CHRISTINE ANDERSON Funeral services for Mrs. Christine Brooks Anderson, 58, of Route 1, Grover, who died July 27 in Cleveland Memorial Hospital at Shelby, were conducted Sun- day at 3:30 p.m. from Old Ellis Chanel Baptist Church by Rev. Walter E. Ellis, interment following in the church cemetery. Mrs. Anderson was a native of Cleveland County, daughter of the late John Wes and Bernice Degree Brooks. She was a member of Old Ellis Baptist Church in Patterson Spr- ings. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Annie Carroll Smith of Grover and Mrs. Mary Lee Crawford of Gastonia; one sister, Mrs. Hattie Dawkins of Shelby; three brothers, J. Hugh Brooks and Wes Brooks, both of Grover, and Bill Brooks of Shelby and 10 grandchildren. BESSIE PUTNAM Funeral services for Bessie Lee Putnam, 84, of Route 1, Grover, who died Wednesday, were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Rev. Eddie Griggs, in- terment following in the church cemetery. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Tom and Lilia Black Mon- tgomery and was a retired textile worker. She was widow of Seth Putnam. Survivors include three sons, Roy and Dan Putnam of Shelby and Boyd Putnam of Mooresboro; three daughters, Betty Ledbetter of Grover and Martha Brindle and Mary Smith of Shelby; two brothers, the Rev. Perry Montgomery of Grover and R.C. Montgomery of Atlan- ta, Ga. 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. JAMES R. OSMENT, JR. Funeral services for James Rhett Osment, 57, of Mountain View Apt. 8, who died July 24, were held July 27 from Carpenter’s Funeral Home in Cherryville by Rev. H.S. Mr. Osment was a native of Cherokee County, S.C., son of the late James Rhett and Bonnie Lorene Hyder Osment, Sr., and retired from Mohican Mills, Lin- colnton. Survivors include his wife, Lenora Elizabeth Lovelace Grif- fie; a son, Howard Oscar Griffie of Belmont; three daughters, Ruth Terres of Kings Mountain, Geraldine Hyde of Gastonia and Linda McCoy of Hendersonville; a stepson, Kenneth Lovelace of Gastonia; two stepdaughters, Juanita Blanton of Gaffney, S.C., and Kathleen Patterson of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Marietta Street Baptist Church Building Fund. MRS. LEWIS HOVIS Mrs. Reola Crawford Hovis, 79, of 604 Meadowbrook Road, died Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Kings Mountain Hospital. She was a retired school teacher who taught at West School for many years. She was daughter of the late E. Leslie and Belle Gerguson Crawford of Gaston County. Mrs. Hovis was a member of Boyce Memorial ARP Church. Surviving are her husband, Lewis Hovis; their daughter, Mrs. Nancy Archer of Kens- ington, Md.; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Grier of Gastonia; Mrs. Janie Hall of Cherryville and Mrs. Lois Smith of Lumberton. Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, will be announc- ed by Harris Funeral Home. E.B. COOKE Funeral services for Espy Bingham (E.B.) Cooke, 84, of Route 6, who died Wednesday in Kings Mountain Hospital, will be conducted Friday at 4 p.m. from Temple Baptist Church of which he was a charter member. Rev. Wray Barrett and Rev. W.F. Monroe will officiate and interment fill be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Mr. Cooke was a native of Iredell County, son of the late John Alexander and Dolly Criscoe Cooke and a retired tex- tile employee. Surviving are his wife, Lois Wilson Cooke; three sons, Espy and Butch Cooke, both of Kings Mountain, and John Cooke of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four daughters, Debbie Smith of Stanley, Marcella Morrow, Don- nie Vee Conner, Peggy Archer, all of Kings Mountain; one sister, Mrs. Idell Radford of Mooresville; 31 grandchldren and 41 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home. Plans Reunion The KMHS Class of 1938 is planning a 50th anniversary gathering Oct. 7 and 8.
