Smith of Mount Holly * Chapter 345 and Boyd Chapman, of Kings Mountain Chapter 123, have been appointed District ~~ Deputies of the 23 District Order of the Eastern Star of North Carolina. The Deputy Grand Matron was by Viola Hardison, Worthy Grand Matron of North Carolina OES, and the Deputy Grand Patron was appointed by Worthy Grand Patron Ray Batts at the annual Eastern Star meeting at Asheville Civic Center recently which chose only 29 district deputy officers from across the state to conduct schools of review, installations, inspect chapters, and serve as liason officers. Mrs. Smith is the wife of Jim Smith Sr. They have two sons, Jimmy and Joel. She is a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Holly and sings in the church choir. She is also an assistant Sunday School teacher for the Willing Workers and the Pioneer Class, administrative board member, a frequent speaker for the children’s sermons and a member and president of River- bend Extension Homemakers. She tutors children and adults in reading and is reading assistant at Kiser Elementary School. She holds a B.A. degree in elemen- tary education from Sacred Heart College and plans to work gu het master’s in reading this all. Chapman and his wife, Pat, live in Kings Mountain. He has one daughter, Cindy, and two grandchildren, Emily and Jay. They are members of Second Baptist Church. A member of the Scottish Rite, Oasis Shrine Tem- ple and White Plains Shrine Club in Kings Mountain and Cleveland Lodge 202, he is employed by Shelby Elastics, Inc. as a shipp- ing superintendent. No Traffic Fatalities In KM During 1987 Kings Mountain is among 23 North Carolina cities with no traffic fatalities in 1987. The N.C. State Motor Club said the number is up from the 18 Tarheel municipalities that had death free records in 1986. Eight cities lost their place on the list, nine held their place and there were 14 new listings. On the negative side, Charlotte continues to lead the state in fatalities with 50 persons killed in traffic accidents. and Winston-Salem followed Charlotte with 26 each. Durham had 13 fatalities and Raleigh followed with 12, A total of 1,600 persons were killed in traffic accidents in North Carolina in 1987 and 114,674 persons were injured. Speeding continues to be the leading violation in fatal ag- cidents. The N.C. Motor Club, of which Dr. John G. Frazier III is presi- dent, released the data following the club’s annual traffic survey, which it conducted in coopera- tion with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles.
