Their unique simple melodies blending in perfect harmony have been a trademark for over 52 years. The group has sold over 50 million records and performed at the prestigious facilities the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall. Their music cheers the discouraged, has brought hope to the hopeless and renewed spiritual strength to those who have drifted away from God. They are as American as ‘Mom and apple pie.” Founded in the early 1930’s by the late D.P. Carter, the group was called the Carter Quartet. Performing on radio station KFYO in Lubbock, Texas, they were paid $15 per week. At the time’ the show was the most popular on the station and receiv- ed thousands of letters each week. Later they moved to WBAP in Fort Worth, one of the nation’s most powerful radio stations. Three months after joining the station, a group known as the Chuck Wagon Gang decided to leave the station. The Carters were asked to assume the name and fill the gap left by the other groups’ departure. At first, the Carters used only western songs, but they soon began throwing in a gospel number. Soon over 90 percent of the fan mail requested gospel numbers and they dropped the western tunes for 100 percent gospel. They were so popular that they remained with the sta- tion for 15 years. Their first recording was made in a hotel in San Antonio in 1936. This was the beginning of a 40 year association with the Colum- bia label. The Chuck Wagon Gang didn’t travel for personal appearances until Wally Fowler invited them to an all-night singing in Atlanta. The groups had always used hymn books when broadcasting. They thought that they were be- ing booked to sing their western songs but upon arrival learned that the event was gospel only. They took their song books on stage with them and sang an all- gospel concert entirely unrehearsed. Current members of the Chuck Wagon Gang are Roy Carter, Ruth Ellen Carter, Pat McKeehan, Harold Timmons and Debbie Trusty. The Loncolnton Citizens Center will open at 5 p.m. Satur- day for ticket sales prior to the 8 p.m. concert. fuer RECEIVES GRANT WASHINGTON, D.C. - Bob Trotman of Casar, has received a KINGS MOUNTAIN HOSPITAL WEEKLY CENSUS REPORT Total Beds Occupied Admissions Births Emergency $15,000 grant from the National Room Endowment for The Arts, Con- Outpatient gressman Cass Ballenger an- nounced today. 8/19/88 48 12 1 38 The grant is part of the Visual 8/20/88 40 2 0 46 Artists Fellowship program 8/21/88 01038 1 0 47 designed to promote the develop- 8/22/88 33 3 0 39 ment of the visual arts.
