The Mountaineers, who had on- ly 155 yards rushing, drove the opening kickoff 55 yards for a TD following a good return. Fullback Toby Deaton and tailback Victor Bell did all of the running and Bell scored from seven yards out. He also had runs of 12 and 16 yards during the march. Todd McDaniel booted the point-after for a 7-0 lead. R-S came back to score on a seven yard pass from Harris to Bryan Miller but the Hilltoppers’ xin point was wide and KM still 7-6. Lockhart scored on a one-yard plunge to make it 13-6 early in the second period, but the KM extra . point attempt was wide and that ave R-S the chance to take the ead after a one-yard touchdown run by Chad Hamby. But Harris's pass for a two-point con- version went into the ground after he felt the heat of the KM rush. ‘‘We really felt all along that it would be a good, close ballgame,” said Hicks. “Every coach we had talked to that had already played them said they dreaded preparing for them as much as anyone. They have a balanced offense and do a lot of things. We go into every game feeling like we have a defense that can keep us in the game and they did that and the offense came through with enough points to give us the victory.” Hicks said he was: again im- pressed with the KM kicking game. The return team did a WHITEY’S good job of giving the offense good field position and punter Todd McDaniel kept R-S backed up most of the night. “Our defense forced a lot of turnovers and picked one up and took it in for a touchdown,” Hicks noted. “That’s the type of things you have to do against a good football team. We feel good that our kids are doing these things.” Hicks said he was pleased with the offensive performance despite five turnovers--four fumbles and one interception. “Taking the first possession and moving right down the field to score put us in real good shape,” he said. ‘‘We had the opportunity from then on out to control the ballgame but we turned it over a couple of times and that got them back into the game.” The victory was the second straight for the Mountaineers and left them at 2-2 in the Southwestern 3-A Conference and 4-3 overall. R-S dropped to 2-2 in the conference and 2-5 overall. Deaton led the KM offense with 77 yards in 15 carries and Bell ad- ded 71 in 17 tries. Defensively, Daryl Gash led the way with 11 tackles and one caused fumble, and Wright add- ed eight tackles and an intercep- tion. Timmy McClain had seven tackles, caused one fumble and intercepted a pass. Brian Ramsey had six tackles and a caused fumble and Daniel Honeycutt and Roderick Alston had six tackles each. Lockhart had a good all-around defensive ame with five tackles, two fum- le recoveries and a defensive touchdown. Reggie Gamble, Roberts and Quan Smith had five tackles each and Allan Chisholm FISH CAMP BUFFET STYLE Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 4:00-9:30 P.M. ALL YOU CARE TO EAT *6.
