>on Wednesday, November 30, 1988-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3A COACH RAY DIXON Coach Ray Dixon’s love was on the football field and his last re- quest of his wife and a dozen veterans of Cannon High School’s winning football teams of the early 1930's was that at his death his ashes be scattered on the turf of Kannapolis Memorial Stadium. Dixon, 84, of Kings Mountain, died Nov. 6. “Ray regarded that four years coaching in Kannapolis (1929-33) as the best time of his life. That last homecoming his former players gave him was what he wanted,” said Mrs. Dixon. Tues- day, Nov. 8 each player scattered a cupful of the ashes at the re- uest of Mrs. Dixon who joined em on the football field, along with family members, for a memorial service. Dixon’s enthusiasm for foot- ball endeared the players and coaches to him and some of his players from the Great Depres- sion era credited him with laying: the foundation for the fine foot- ball program Kannapolis has en- joyed the past half century. They remembered Dixon as a coach who inspired them to do their best, to play to win but be fair in winning. Local insuranceman Tom Trott, formerly of Kannapolis, was another of his friends who praised the ex-coach for his leadership abilities to bring out the best in people.
