COOKING DINNER FOR 100 - Annie Lee Mitchem, left, Mozelle Green and Alice MItchem, right, prepare to serve turkey and ham with all the trimmings to 100 friends at Mount Zion Baptist Church, an annual holiday project. A Green Tradition Mozelle Green Has Fed Friends Christmas Dinner For 46 Years This is the 46th Christmas season that Mozelle Green has sponsored a Christmas dinner for 75-100 friends. Mrs. Green, active member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, started the tradition in her home when she of- fered to cook dinner for her fellow members of Nancy Caldwell Circle. About 25 attended the first holiday gathering but the next year each member invited a friend and soon the house overflowed and Mrs. Green moved the holiday occasion to the fellowship hall of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Tuesday night, nearly 100 people filled the hall and Mrs. Green, assisted by other circle members, enter- tained them royally. Mrs. Green and her assistants in the kitchen, Annie Lee Mitchem and her sister-in-law, Alice Mitchem, had spent the day putting the finishing touches to the meal which included turkey and ham with all the trimmings, rice and gravy, green beans, cranberry salad, pickled peaches, candied yams, turnip greens, cornbread and fresh coconut cake. Alice Mitchem provided her own recipe for cran- berry salad and Mrs. Green cooked the 19 pound » turkey and baked four of her yummy coconut cakes in addition to supervising all the cooking. In addition, the hostesses picked out Christmas presents’ for the guests = Mix. oem; ranberry ju 0, pi u pr Et which has veen mixed with 1/2 cup water. Add to hot and decorated the hall with Christmas decorations which included a big tree. Each member of the circle invited guests and bought gifts for their special guests. Keeping traditions at Christmas has always been important to the three women and to the circle they have belonged to for many years. "It was our way of saying Merry Christmas to our friends," recalled Mrs. Green who said that in 1952 she began the tradition be- cause the circle had completed a good year and the cel- ebration was much deserved." Mrs. Green has worked for Senator and Mrs. J. Ollie Harris for nearly 30 years and she often cooks their favorite dishes. For several weeks now the three women have been baking and freezing goodies and planning the event. "It just wouldn't be Christmas without this dinner," said Mrs. Green. Those attending the Tuesday event agreed wholeheartedly.
