Mounties Sweep
Kings Mountain High's varsity
basketball teams returned to action
Tuesday night by sweeping 2-A
Bessemer City in non-conference
games at the KMHS gym.
The Kings Mountain girls played
their best game of the season to win
the opener 44-25 and the
Mountaineers won their sixth game

opens Southwestern 3-A Conference
play Tuesday night at home against
R-S Central.
Sophomore Nicole Barnes moved
into the starting point guard position
for the Lady Mountaineers and led
all scorers with 14 points. Woods
scored eight and Melton seven.
Dawn King led BC with 12.
Kings Mountain was in command
from the opening buzzer. Coach
Ronny Funderburke's ladies held a
14-3 advantage after the first quar-
ter, a 26-9 lead at halftime and a 35-
14 margin going into the fourth
quarter.
Kings Mountain dominated the
boards with Woods, Melton and
Degree getting seven rebounds each
and Suzette Feemster four.
"In the last two weeks, we've lost
both of our starting guards, Tessie
Ruff and Carmen Smith," Coach
Funderburke noted. "But Barnes
stepped in and did a great job." Ruff
injured her knee in the recent
Shelby Star Holiday Tournament at
Burns and Smith, who moved from
the shooting guard to point guard to
replace Ruff, injured her ankle in
Bessemer City
practice Monday.
"But we got Angela Woods back
for the first time tonight and she
helped out a lot," Funderburke said.
"We need her to come in and give us
some inside strength when Adrienne
Woods gets into foul trouble.
Sharon Melton did a great job and
Velma Degree also came in and
helped out a lot."
The victory improved KM's
iron to 2-5. Bessemer City fell to
Daniel Honeycutt came off the
bench to score 20 points to lead the
Mountaineers to victory in the
nightcap. Kings Mountain raced to a
20-4 first quarter lead and Coach
Larry Sipe was clearing his bench
by the end of the first period. All of
his players saw action.
Jeff Ross and Patrick Jones added
14 points each to the Mountaineer
Lakers Win Boys Club Tourney
The Lakers edged the Jazz 45-44
in overtime Friday to win the annual
Kings Mountain Boys Club Holiday
Basketball Tournament at Central
School.
Tournament Most Valuable Player
‘Bryan Leftwich scored 28 points
and Cedric Smith added 11 to lead
the winners. Raphel Williams
scored 13 points and Corey Leach
10 for the losers.
Making the all-tournament team
were Tank Roseboro, Rodney
Brown, Eric Tate, Raphel Williams,
Jarvis Adams, Cedric Smith,
Lamount Littlejohn, Cameron Falls
and Corey Leach.
In the consolation game Friday,
the Pistons outscored the Hawks 58-
53. Cameron Falls scored 12,
Rodney Brown 11 and Tico Crocker
10 for the winners and Robert
Williams had 18, Eric Tate 12 and
Alex Burris eight for the Hawks.
Temple Double
Winner At KMBC
Temple won a pair of games as
the Kings Mountain Boys Club's 15-
under Basketball League opened its
season Friday at the Central School
gym.
Temple edged Carolina 62-61 in
overtime in the opening game of a
four-game schedule, and then came
back in the final game to defeat
Duke 74-59. In other action, Duke
outscored Clemson 80-66 and
Carolina defeated Clemson 67-56.
Stanker Williams was the big gun
for Temple, scoring 28 points in the
win over Carolina and 32 in the vic-
tory over Duke. Todd Bell added 10
against Carolina and Tyron Crocker
had 18 against Duke. Sheldon
Thompson scored 31 and Bryan
Wilson 11 for Carolina and Rodney
Falls had 20 and John Adams 10 for
Duke.
Rodney Falls scored 29 points,
Billy Davis 13 and Rodney Guinn
12 to lead Duke over Clemson.
Casey Holland scored 16 and Calvin
Whitner 12 for Clemson.
Sheldon Thompson scored 31
points, Bryan Wilson 16 and Tank
Roseboro 12 to lead Carolina over
Clemson. Cas:y Holland and
Rodney Brown led Clemson with 12
and 10 points, respectively.
Tournament action got underway
last Tuesday with all three first
round games going overtime. The
76ers edged the Pistons 36-34, the
Lakers outscored the Bulls 60-57
and the Jazz nipped the Cavaliers
Lamount Littlejohn scored 14
points and Lance McClain 10 to
lead the 76ers victory. Rodney
Brown scored 17 and Tico Crocker
eight for the Pistons.
Bryan Leftwich scored 21 points,
Cedric Smith 20 and Maurice Jarrett
10 to lead the Lakers. Tank
Roseboro had 36 and Marcus Smith
10 for the Bulls.
Raphel Williams scored 17 points
and Corey Leach 10 to lead the Jazz
over the Cavaliers. Brian Hillman
led the Cavs with 14 and Jarvis
- Adams added 11.
Two of the three second round
games Wednesday also went over-
time, with the Cavaliers edging the
Bulls 31-29 and the Jazz beating the
Hawks 38-35. In the other game, the
Lakers defeated the 76ers 54-38.
