| Obituaries | BILL DRINKARD Funeral services for Bill Drinkard, 68, Route 1 Grover, who died Jan. 8 at home, were conducted Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Patterson Springs Baptist Church by Rev. Hugh Richardson, interment follow- ing in the church cemetery. A native of Demoplis, Ala., he was a retired welder with Daniels Construction Co., a member of the Shepard Baptist Church in Fayette, Ala., and served in the Navy during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Joy Dailey Drinkard; mother, Lila Tuggle of Columbus, Miss., daughter, Diane Garrett of Gastonia; two brothers, W. L. Tuggle Jr. and Kilby Tuggle of Columbus, Miss.; two sisters, M. G. Woolbright of Columbus, Miss., and M. L. Brannyon of Selma, Ala.; three half-sisters, Shirley Hogan and Lloyd Livingston of Jacksonville, Fla. and L. E. Davis of Fayette, Ala., and two grandchildren. IRENE DOVER Funeral services for Irene Elizabeth Dover, 76, of 709 Hamrick St., Shelby, who died Tuesday, Jan. 5 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital, were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church in Shelby by Rev. C. A. Kirby Jr. and the Rev. Norman Brown, interment following in Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery. A Cherokee County, S.C. native, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Wheeler and Nancy Elizabeth Roberts. She was retired from Shelby Mill Co. She was Mother of the year at Second Baptist Church in 1987. She was a member of Rebecca Sunday School Class and J. O. Y. Group at Second Baptist Church. Her husband was the late Robert Lee Dover. Surviving are two sons, Jimmy Dover of Indian Trail and Bill Dover of Shelby; five sisters, Nanci Ellis and Carol Ledford of Shelby, Joyce Whitten of Madison, Ind., Jean Elliott of Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Mary Wilson of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Edwin and Donald Roberts of Shelby and Paul Roberts of Santa Clara,Calif.; two sisters, Gertrude Allen of Shelby and Oveta Gantt of Columbus, Ga.;16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church,1114 S. Lafayette St., Shelby, 28150. ROBERT HERMAN PERRY Funeral services for Robert Herman Perry, 70, of 814 Third St., who died Monday in Kings - Mountain Hospital, were conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Missionary Methodist Church. Rev. Howard Hardin and Rev. Elbert Mills officiated at the rites and interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Mr. Perry was a native of Buncombe County, son of the late Charlie W. and Anna Fletcher Terry. He was stepson of the late Elmer Harbin. Surviving are his brother, Charles Amos Terry of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Strange and Mrs. Bonnie Hannah, both of Kings Mountain; several nieces and nephews. CARD OF THANKS The family of Ivey Arthurs wish to thank everyone for cards, flowers, phone calls and the Kings Mountain Convalescent Center that cared for Dad in his last days, also we want to thank the friends, relatives and both pastors who attended his funeral. AMOS Funeral services for Mrs. Bertie Wilson Amos, 86, of 816 North Piedmont Avenue, retired Kings Mountain merchant, were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of which she was a member. Dr. John Sloan, pastor of the church, assisted by Dr. Joel Jenkins of Salisbury, former pastor, officiat- ed. Interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Mrs. Amos was a native of York County, S. C., daughter of the late Edward Nelson and Nancy White Wilson. She was widow of Matthew Christopher Amos. She had retired from Amos & Sons Dry Goods which the Amoses owned and oper- ated for many years. She was a member of Kings Mountain Chapter 123 Order of Eastern Star, Woodmen of the World, 3B's Sunday School Class and Golden Fellowship Group of First Baptist Church and a former member of the Kings Mountain Woman's Club. Surviving are two sons, James E Amos of Kings Mountain and Dr. William E Amos of Phoenix, Arizona; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Wilson of Spartanburg, S. C. and Mrs. James Wilson of Salisbury; four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Millwood of Gaffney, S.C., Mrs. Beulah Jones of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Mabel Starnes and Mrs. Ruth Worley, both of Spartanburg, S.C., four grand- children and three great-grandchil- dren. BEN H. GOFORTH SR. Funeral services for Ben Hunter Goforth Sr., 90, of Roxford Road, who died Sunday at home, were conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Boyce Memorial ARP Church of which he was a member. Dr. William Tyson officiated at the rites and interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Recently her first poem was accept- ed for publication by Quill Books of Minot, North Dakota. "I was so excited that my poem was one of 245 among 1200 accept- ed for publication in a collection of poetry which is termed good old- fashioned poetry," she said. Mrs. Hullender said the collection of po- etry is intended to promote and revi- talize an interest in poetry and to give deserving novice poets an op- portunity to have their works pub- lished. Hullender's first poem was enti- tled,"A Time To Be Free." She wrote her published work one day when she said she was "feeling a bit down." Mrs. Hullender owns and oper- ates her own tax service in her home at 520 Cleveland Avenue. Her published poem, for which she received no money but recogni- tion in a national publication, was entitled,"Rejected” and reads: "I launched by boat, it would not float; It sank right at my feet; The sail fell down amid the sound of crashing waves and my small creek; But somewhere deep inside, de- sire completely filled my breast. Tomorrow I'll reconstruct and put my new boat to the test; - If it should float then I will know that finally I have reached my goal." on RENT-A-VAN GOING ON WINTER Mr. Goforth was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late Sylvanus and Alice Harmon Goforth. He was a retired textile employee. His wife was the late Mary Bradford Goforth, who oper- ated the Employment Security Commission office in Kings Mountain for many years. Surviving are his son, Ben H. Goforth Jr. of Charlotte; three grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. JAMES C. DeVANE FLORENCE, S.C. - James Clyde DeVane, 85, widower of Thelma Marshall DeVane, died early Friday morning in a Florence convalescent home after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Stoudenmire Funeral Chapel. Burial, with Masonic Rites, will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mr. DeVane was born in Wilmington, N.C., a son of the late David Camden and Lorena Dally King DeVane.
