Funeral services for Yates Augustus Smith Jr., 63, of 5210-B Midpines, will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church. Rev. Dale Thornburg will offici- ate at the rites and interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Mr. Smith died Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at Veterans Administration Medical Center at Oteen. He was a native of Kings Mountain, son of the late Yates A. Smith Sr. and Lela Bell Anderson Smith. He was a retired textile *wister operator. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Jane Sellers Smith; two daughters, Pat Gold of Sharpsburg, N. C. and Ree Byrd of Blowing Rock; two brothers, Charles Smith of Gastonia and Jack Smith of Dallas; three sis- ters, Frances Helms of Gastonia, Gladyes Sisk and Isabel Cook of Kings Mountain; and four grand- children. Smith was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, VFW Post 9811, American Legion Post 155 and Disabled American Veterans. The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home. R.C. ETTERS Funeral services for Russell Cameron (Sam) Etters, 65, of 516 Hawthorne Lane, Gastonia, who died Jan. 23 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at McLean & Sons Funeral Home. Rev. Morgan Gardner officiated and interment was in Gaston Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Scott Cloninger, Rusty Cloninger, Alan Cloninger, the Rev. Ron Kinsey, Gregory Newman and Ricky Accurso. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Russell Harris and Lizzie Lee Randall Etters. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Fairview Lodge 339 AF&AM of Kings Mountain, Shrine Oasis Temple and Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina. He was president and owner of R. C. Etters Insurance Agency. He served in World War II and was a member of Absher- Flowers VEW Post. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Ann Jacobs Etters; stepdaughter, Mrs. Bett Jean Cody; sister, Mrs. Earl Cloninger of Kings Mountain; granddaughters, Mrs. Brigette Brown, Mrs. Chrystal Costner, Mrs. Allison Parker; and grandson, Scott Cody. ELLA CARROLL COBB Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Carroll Cobb, 89, of Kings Mountain Convalescent Center, who died Jan. 22 in the Kings Mountain Hospital, were conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel. Dr. John Sloan and Rev. James Sanders officiated and interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. A native of Kings Mountain, Mrs. Cobb was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Foster Carroll. She was the widow of the late Eustas Dewitt Cobb. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Surviving are her sons, Bill and Zach Cobb of Kings Mountain and Clyde Cobb of Cheraw, S. C.; daughters, Mrs. Marie Ling of Englewood Fla., and Mrs. Geraldine Hullender of High Point; brother, William Carroll of Asheboro; sis- ters, Mrs. Lula Grigg of Gastonia and Mrs. Lona James of Kings Mountain; and seven grandchildren, Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. EVAN B. WEHUNT Funeral services for Evan B, Wehuht, 69, Route 2, Blacksburg, S. C., formerly of Cherryville, were conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Carpenter's Funeral Home in Cherryville by Rev. Ralph T. Lowrimore, interment following in Cherryville's City Cemetery. He died Jan. 18 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Fulton County, Ga., he was son of the late Dr. E. S. and Bessie Dixon Wehunt and former owner and operator of Precision Frame and Alignment, Chicago. He: was a Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of Canaan United Methodist Church, Smyma, and William McKinley Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Peeler Wehunt; son, Evan S.' Wehunt II of Grover; daughter, Carol Stavropoulos of Columbia; brother, Dr. Lloyd Wehunt of Valdese; and two sisters, Elizabeth Wehunt of Mount Holly and Rosabell Hampton of Durham. ALVINA H, TALLEY Funeral services for Mrs. Alvina Henry Talley, 82, Route 2, Bethlehem Church Road, who died Jan. 20, were conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. Jesse Bailey officiated and interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. She was a native of Trinidad, Colorado, wife of the late James Clinton Talley, daughter of the late Sylvester and Areulia Cordova Henry and retired restaurant manag- er. Survivors include three sons, Lenny LaRue of Henderson, Nevada, Kenny LaRue of Gastonia and Jimmy LaRue of Rowland Heights, Calif., four daughters, Mrs. Freda Sellers of Kings Mountain, Mrs. Addie Welling of Conway, Arkansas, Mrs. Dorothy Mansfield of Ennis, Texas, and Mrs. Anita Scott of Daleville, Indiana; brother, Sylvester Henry of Lavita, Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Della Montoya of Rocky Ford, Colorado and Mrs. Inez Dominques of Trinidad, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. HORACE HERNDON JR, Funeral services for Horace Blair Herndon Jr., 63, of 312 N. Cansler St., were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel by Rev. John Harris, interment following in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Mr. Herndon died Jan. 21 at home. He was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late Horace Blair and Effie Grice Curry Herndon. He was a retired railroad dispatcher. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his son, Horace Blair Herndon III of Blacksburg,S. C. and one sister, Mrs. Geraldine Tesseneer of Kings Mountain. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ARTHUR ALLEN Funeral services for Arthur Allen, 80, of 710 York Road, were con- ducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Harris Chapel by Rev. J. C. Goare and Rev. Wray Barrett, Masonic rites following in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Mr. Allen died Jan. 23 at 6:10 a.m. at home. A native of Laurens,S.C., he was a retired textile employee and for- mer plant superintendent at Lambeth Rope Corporation. He was owner and operator of Allen's Wood Crafts at his home on York Road. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Owens Allen; two sons, Charles Allen of Denton and Arthur Allen Jr. of Charlotte; one brother, Edwin Allen of Greenville,S.C., two sis- ters, Mrs. Norva Hopper of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Lillie Mae Holder of Ranlo; four half-sisters, Mrs. Launa Cooley of Aiken, S.C., Mrs. Maude Boyte of Camden, S.C., Mrs. Sybil Platt of Summerville,Ga. and Mrs. Mabel Knight of Woodruff, S.C. Also surviving are four grandchildren. He was a member of White Plains Shrine Club of Kings Mountain, Piedmont Shrine Club of Shelby and Fairview Lodge 339 of Kings Mountain. CLAUDE THOMPSON Graveside services for Claude Hoke Thompson, 79, of Wesley Nursing Center, Charlotte, formerly of Kings Mountain, were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby by Rev. Wilbur Maxwell. A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late Z. J. and Claudia Hoke Thompson. He was married to Marian Harrill Thompson. Surviving are his wife, one son, C. Hoke Thompson of Charlotte; two daughters, Mrs, Jane Neisler of Pageland,S.C. and Mrs Ann McCutchan of Chapel Hill; one brother, William A. Thompson of Shelby; and four grandchildren. Mr, Thompson died Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Wesley Nursing Center in Charlotte, Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. WHITWORTH Funeral services for Clifton Bruce Whitworth, 97, of Ike Brooks Drive, who died Jan. 22 at Kings Mountain Convalescent Center, were conduct- ed Wednesday at 3 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Rev. H. Lynn McDowell officiat- ed and interment was in Kelly's Chapel Cemetery, Bessemer City. A Kings Mountain native, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth Whitworth. He was a for- mer member of St. James Baptist Church, Bessemer City, and a mem- ber of First Congregational United Church of Christ. He retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad Co. in Roanoke, Va. after 47 years. Surviving are his sons, Vaughan Whitworth of Los Angeles, Calif., Alva Whitworth of Nashua, N. H.; daughters, Faye W. Webber of Kings Mountain, Prince Ramseur of Gastonia, Gwendolyn Dudley of Roanoke, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild. Bond Answers A call-in forum will be sponsored by Radio Station WKMT on Thursday, Feb. 2 to answer ques- tions from listeners about the Feb. 7 bond referendum. Mayor Kyle Smith and City Manager George Wood will be at the station to answer questions on the air.
