KMHS Golfers Seeking
Third Straight SW Title
Kings Mountain High's golfers
have a chance to do something that
very few--if any--other
Southwestern 3-A Conference
teams have done before, and that's
win the conference and go unde-
feated for three years in a row.
Coach Denny Hicks'
Mountaineers have won the title
the last two years, and have the tal-
ent to do it again. They open their
season on March 16 at North
Gaston.
Hicks has four starters back
from last year's team and has some
talented sophomores who helped
the junior high school win golf
championships for three straight
seasons.
"Everybody looks like they've
a yainproved,” says Hicks. "The
weather has been terrible and we
haven't practiced that much, but
during the course of the off-season
I had the opportunity to see a lot of
i» “them working on their games, and
they looked good."
. The Mountaineers qualified as a
team for the state tournament two
years ago, when most of their play-
ers were sophomores, and they
missed qualifying for the state by a
single stroke last year. "That was
the worst round of golf we'd played

Mounties with 15 points, and Quan
Smith added 13 in a reserve role.
Patrick Jones added 11 and Darius
Ross 10.
East Rutherford's girls had to
come from behind in the fourth
quarter to eliminate the KM ladies
Thursday night. Kings Mountain
outscored East 12-4 in the third
quarter to take a 33-32 lead into the
final eight minutes but East came
back to hold KM to six points in
the fourth quarter to claim the win.
Nana Wilkie scored 16 points
and Melissa Lee 15 to lead the East
Rutherford attack. Sharon Melton
| had 12 for Kings Mountain.
The Lady Cavaliers won the
game at the foul line, hitting eight
> 10 shots to just two of four for
lings Mountain.

in two years, and it came in the re-
gionals when you have to score in
the top three to qualify for the
state. I hope that's an experience
that will be well burned into our
minds. I feel like if we reach our
potential and play like we're capa-
ble of playing, that this could be a
very successful year," he said.
Heading the list of returnees is
senior Brad Wilson, a two-time
SWC Player of the Year. Junior
Brady Goforth missed sharing that
honor with Wilson last year by a
single stroke.
Other returning seniors are
Rusty Bumgardner and John Van
Dyke, and newcomers are sopho-
; { mores . Robbie. Wilson, Ryan
.. Broadwell and Mitch. Morrow, and
freshman Matt Heavener. Brad
Wilson, Bumgardner, and Goforth
were all-conference last season.
"Broadwell, Robbie Wilson and
Matt Heavener were the top play-
ers on the junior high team the last
couple of years, and they all look
good," says Hicks. "Heavener is
only a freshman but he shows a
tremendous amount of potential.
All three of these players will play
a major role in our success this
year."

Water Exercise Classes Set
Kings Mountain Parks and
Recreation Department will be of-
fering water exercise classes for se-
nior citizens at the newly con-
structed indoor pool at Kings
Mountain High School.
Classes have been tentatively
scheduled from 2:05 p.m. to 2:50
p-m. each Tuesday and Thursday.
The registration fee is $15 for eight
sessions.
Water exercises can be very
therapeutic for seniors who suffer
from arthritis. They can also bene-
fit any senior who is trying to keep
in shape by providing exercises
with very little stress on the body.
Aging Director Monty Thornburg
encourages all seniors wishing to
participate to contact David
Hancock at the Parks and
Recreation Department, 734-0449.
The Senior Center vans will pro-
vide shuttle service for those se-
niors needing transportation.
