STAC,
HALBERT WEBB AND HIS WORK
Webb's Paintings On Display
Page 12A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, April 19, 1989
At Mauney Memorial Library
Matching shades on canvass is the secret of Halbert
Webb's success as a artist who learned to paint from
matching shades of dye for 27 years at the old
Margrace Mill.
Webb's activity and humor belie his 85 years. He is
still as adept with the paint brush as he was in 1945
when he painted his first landscape. Webb paintings
are prized possessions of friends and kin from all over
the country.
Webb's collection of art will be displayed at
Josephine E. Weir Auditorium during library hours at
Mauney Memorial Library beginning Monday.
"I've never sold one of my paintings but some years
ago in Laurel Hill when Congressman Bill Heffner's
wife was campaigning for her husband's election she
saw a painting she liked instantly. I told her I wouldn't
sell the original but I would paint one for her. She of-
fered me $250 for it but I gave it to her with pride and
told her to enjoy it," said Webb.
Landscapes are favorite subjects of Halbert who al-
so has painted First Presbyterian Church, where he is
an Elder Emeritus; First Presbyterian manse, his for-
mer home at West Mountain Street and the former
Meek Ormand home on West Mountain Street, some
of the town's landmarks. Some of his paintings hang at
First Presbyterian Church, at the manse occupied by
Dr. and Mrs. Eric Faust, at the Kings Mountain Herald,
at the home of friends in the community and in the
home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Dick Webb, in Richmond, Va. Webb's five grandchil-
dren and six great-grandchildren share the pride of Mr.
Webb's works and have many of his paintings in their
homes. When Webb moved into an apartment at 204 S.
Tracy Street he gave the bulk of his older paintings to
friends and relatives. There is a place for some of his
newer works at his apartment and each month he par-
ticipates in a class conducted by John Brady at A. B.
Snow Studio and contributes another painting to add
to his growing collection. Webb took art lessons from
Shirley Brutko in recent years and has been a student
of A. B. Snow for several years. He is also active in
Southern Art Society formed by Mrs. Snow for aspir-
ing artists and painters.
"Halbert likes to paint a variety and on his country
scenes he always features a cow, barns, figures and
water," said Mrs. Snow.
One of his newest paintings depicts a lake with a
speedboat crossing the water and an American flag fly-
ing at the back of the boat. Garden scenes are favorite
subjects during springtime and many of the Webb
paintings are florals with azaleas, dogwoods and other
spring flowers predominant. Small churches catch the
artist's eye and he has painted them with tall steeple as
one of his favorites. His painting of First Presbyterian
Church and his former home, where he resided with
his late wife, Mary Belle Cannon Webb, and two chil-
dren, Dick Webb and the late Jean Webb Neill, hold
special memories for him.
Webb's paintings won 10 ribbons, including two
Hi of show" awards at the Spring In Shelby festi-
vals
