PLT NN HERALD-Wednesday April 19, 1989 SAFE ON PICKOFF PLAY - South Point's Mike Young hustles back to first base to avoid being picked off in Friday night's Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball game with Kings Mountain at KM's Lancaster Field. The Red Raiders won 10-0 to take over sole possession of first place. Raiders From Page 1-B Bryan Harris's RBI double gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead in the third, and South Point put the game away with three runs in the fourth, high- lighted by Young's two-run double and Broome's RBI single. The Mountaineers face a pair of tough Rutherford County foes dur- ing the next week. They host R-S Central's Hilltoppers Friday at 7:30 and gravel to East Rutherford Tuesday. The Mounties had to come from behind to beat both of those teams in first half action. Swimmers Compete Seventy swimmers from Sharks Aquatics Club participated in a two-day meet at Belmont Abbey College this past weekend. The club postted 15 first place honors and scored for many other posi- tions. This was the first meet for most of the Kings Mountain swimmers who began this year. Those who at- tended were: 15 - 18 years - Nancy Rednour, Jenny Summey, Aaron Allen, Brian Cloninger, Benji Davis. 13 - 14 years - Sarah Dilling, Paula Eckard, Julie Kennum, Leigh Kendrick, Jeannie Martin, Marie Mayse, Genora Taylor, Jonathan Jones, Ricky Huffman. 11 - 12 years - Haley Bridges, Amy Dixon, Nikki Gladden, Carrie Hardin, Michelle Hutchins, Amber Jordan, Wendy Martin, Holly Parker, Sharon Stryzkalski, Becky Taylor, Buddy Huckabee, Jonathan Lovelace, Tim Stroup. 9 - 10 years - Elizabeth Dilling, Laura Beth Smith, Jackie Houston, Jonathan Cooke, Nathan Mayse, Clark Stowe. 8 and under - Elise Mayse. Kings Mountain swimmers who placed in the top six for individual strokes were; 13 - 14 girls - Sarah Dilling, 5th place 100 fly; Paula Eckard, Sth place 200 breast. 15 - 18 girls - Nancy Rednour, 6th 100 free; Sth 200 back. 10 and under boys - Nathan Mayse, 2nd in 50 free, 50 breast, and 100 IM; 3rd in 100 free; 4th 200 IM; 5th in S50 back. 13 - 14 boys - Jonathan Jones, 2nd in 200 back. 15 - 18 boys - Brian Cloninger, 6th in 200 breast. Benji Davis, Sth in 200 breast. The Sharks also posted wins in several relays. The 13-14 girls medley team consisted of Sarah Dilling, Paula Eckard, Lucinda Davis and Allison Hannah. The 15- 18 boys medley included Aaron Allen, Travis Demetro, Mike Sever and Stephen Waldrep. Burns Dale Greene contributed three hits each and Toby Deaton added two as the Mounties ripped a pair of Burns pitchers for 21 hits. Plonk clubbed his first homerun in the third inning to spark a five- run rally which gave the Mounties a 6-3 lead. The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the margin to 6- 5, but Plonk homered again in the fourth and fifth as the Mounties in-- creased their lead to 13-5. "I'm real proud of the way our guys have come off Friday's loss to South Point," said Coach Clark. "They put together two victories over two pretty good baseball teams. I felt like Friday night was a big game but it's not the end of the season. We've still got another shot at them and as long as we keep winning we're going to be in good shape. We've completed the first half of the conference season with only one loss. If we can do that the second half everything's going to be just fine." KMHS Golfers Win Fourth Kings Mountain High's golfers won their fourth straight match Thursday at Cleghorne against R-S Central, Chase and South Point. The Mountaineers shot a 322 to 365 for South Point, 395 for Chase and 396 for R-S Central. Brad Wilson and Brady Goforth of the Mountaineers shared medal- ist honors with 78s. Matt Heavner shot a 79 and Ryan Broadwell 87. The Mountaineers go to South Point Thursday to battle the Red Raiders, Burns and North Gaston. CHAD PLONK HOMERS AGAIN Dale Greene Offers Congratulations Junior High Whips Burns 11-0 Kings Mountain Junior High's Patriots continued their unbeaten string Monday at Lancaster Field, defeating Burns 11-0 in a Bi- County Middle School Conference game. The win gives Coach Tommy Wease's charges a 7-0 overall record and a 5-0 conference mark. The Patriots have won 14 in a row tracing back to last year. Stephen Fisher went the distance on the mound Monday, scattering four hits and fanning five. He walked only two. Robbie Ruff and Tee Gee Goforth paced the Patriot offense with two hits apiece. The Patriots gave Fisher all the working room he needed in the first inning, scoring two runs on singles by Ruff and Damon Putnam, and a sacrifice fly by Mike Smith. The Pats scored another run in the second as Goforth doubled, stole third and scored on Ruff's sin- gle. Kings Mountain scored three runs in the third to make it 6-0. Fisher singled and Jenkins and Putnam walked to load the bases. After Fisher scored on a passed ball, Goforth singled to score Jenkins and Putnam.
