The Mauney Memorial Library hosted the spring meeting of the Broad River Library/Media Association on Wednesday at 10:00 o'clock. Guest speaker, Moses Nueman, gave a program on his native Nigeria. He wore the costume of his tribe and showed slides and photographs of his country and its culture. Nueman came to the United States in order to go to school. He has attended Gaston College and Cleveland Community College and has studied such diverse sub- jects as business administration and photography. He is now in business for himself, but he is working to im- prove the educational standards in his own country. His presentation focused on the needs of education and libraries in the Nigerian villages. Nueman said that his village is very poor, but the people are hungry for books and knowledge. However, the tools for learning are very scarce. Often there is only one book per classroom. The teacher uses the one book and writes the information non the chalk board for the students to copy in their notebooks. There are no other sources available for the children to get addi- tional information or other points of view. Paper and pencils are very precious commodities in the Nigerian villages. Spiral notebooks used for class work cost $10.00 a piece. In order to use up all the available space on a sheet of paper, the student uses both sides and writes between the lines. Different as- signments are done in different colors of ink. Pencils are used down to the last bit of lead. Students fit the stub of the pencil in a piece of bamboo so they can hold on to it and write. There are no public community libraries in Nigeria as we know them in the United States. The few li- braries that exist are a part of the schools and universi- ties in the large cities, but the poor people in the vil- lages have no access to books. Nueman has sent many books back to his country and has established a library in his village. The library is open to all who wish to Library Hosts Library/Media Uptown At The Library By ROSE TURNER Mauney Memorial Librarian use it. There is no danger of theft or vandalism as the children as well as adults handle the books carefully and with respect. As Nueman talked, I could not help but think about the advantages our own children have, and how little they use them. While the children in Nigeria are eager to learn, so many American children are bored with school, waste their time, and get by with the least 3ef- fort possible. Schools are readily available, yet the drop out rate continues to be high, and illiteracy is widespread. Teachers strive to motivate their classes but so many students remain unresponsive. The tools of learning are wasted at an astonishing rate. While the Nigerian village child is writing four or five assign- ments on the same sheet of paper and using a stub of a pencil, the American child is wadding up sheets of pa- per with only one or two lines written on it, and break- ing pencils in pieces for the fun of it. Books are de- faced, torn and misused without a thought. We try to entice children and adolescents to use the library by offering various programs, but a large percent of the population do not participate. We can learn many things by looking at other cul- | tures. Nueman's discussion of his country and its needs for the basic tools of learning should help us see our own educational system in a new perspective. KM Schools Lunch Menus May 1.
