A FIRST PRESBYTERIAN First Presbyterian Church will Sponsor a women's hike Saturday, April 29. All women interested in this hike are to meet at the church at 10 a.m. and bring a bag lunch. The Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Western North Carolina will award three scholar- ships of $750.00 each to eligible Presbyterian young people for the school year 1989-90. Deadline will be May 1. Applications and addi- tional information are in the church office. - A workshop on General Teaching Methods in Christian Education will be held at Long Creek Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 13 from 1:00 - 3:00. Leaders will be a team of students from Presbyterian School of Christian Education, including Amy Robison, a member of Long Creek. The group will focus on general teaching methods, so teachers from any age group would benefit from attending. Bicentennial of Presbyterian Church (USA) will be held on May 14, Pentecost Sunday. This worship will honor the Lord God on the 200th anniversary of this branch of His church. Special events for that day will include the Lord's Supper celebrated in the Recreation Building at 10 a.m. with fellowship time afterward. The 11 a.m. wor- ship will offer special opportunity to pray for the church (world-wide, denomination, and congregation). Preacher for the morning will be Dr. Ben F. Ormand now honorably retired and living in Brevard. Beautiful anthems will enhance the praise-giving, and special chil- dren's time will add to the celebra- tion. Dinner in the Fellowship Hall will be one of those great "covered dish" kinds which make First Presbyterian such a scrumptious bunch. Members are encouraged to re- member the following dates: May 4 - Kings Mountain Council of Church Women Banquet, 6:30 p.m., May 14 - Bicentennial Celebration of PC (USA), May 14 - Mother's Day - The Presbyterian Homes, Inc. Offering, May 21 - Adult Worker Training, June 12-16 - Vacation Bible School. (KINGS MOUNTAIN BAPTIST ¢ The men of Kings Mountain Baptist Church have been meeting at 7 a.m. on Saturdays in the scout hut. They use this time to pray to- gether and to just praise the Lord. All men of the church are encour- aged to attend. Sunday night, April 30, will be the fifth Sunday, meaning a night of praise and singing! Members are urged to mark their calendars for this occasion and to call Rick or Edie with a special request for a song or a singer! FIRST BAPTIST First Baptist Church members will be having a picnic at the kings * Mountain State Park Saturday, may 6 about 2 o'clock. Everyone is in- vited to attend. Just be sure to bring your blanket and folding chairs to relax and enjoy being to- gether as a church family. That evening, George and Tammy Fuller from Wake Forest will provide a musical program. A women's retreat will be held at White Oak Assembly, White Oak, S.C. April 28-29. Speaker will be Joan Long. Any women wanting to play on the women's softball team should see Pam Jackson. Any men want- ing to play on the men's softball team, see Shane Doty. You may sign up in the church office. Parents need to e aware of the very special date of june 4. This particular Sunday evening will be the time when the Children's Choirs will sing. Incidently, the Music Makers choir will also sing on Sunday evening, April 30. PATTERSON GROVE Patterson Grove's next fellow- ship supper will be a covered dish supper to be held Wednesday evening, May 10, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Singles bring one dish; fami- lies bring two dishes. Drinks will be furnished. Revival services will continue at Patterson Grove through Thursday evening. Dr. Joel Jenkins will be preaching. Rev. Richard Plyler, pastor, invites everyone to attend. Visitation will take place each Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The seminar "You and Your Teen" began Sunday at 6 p.m. This seminar will run four weeks. You can still sign up for this most im- portant seminar. Members are encouraged to sign up to work in Vacation Bible School. The sign-up sheet will be located on the bulletin board. The Vacation Bible School clinic will be held at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby on May 9th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Reminder: If you shopped at Food Lion on April 17, 18, or 19, remember to turn in your signed receipt with "BCH" written on the back. Food Lion will give five per- cent of the total to Baptist Children's Homes to expand Cameron Boys Camp. Two Gospel Music Greats Perform In Area It was a rare occassion for two such renowned gospel music singers to perform in our area in one day. Such was the case on Sunday, April 16. The legendary james Blackwood was the special guest for Spring Rally Day at the First. Wesleyan Church in Cherryville. He sand during the 11 > a.m. service. Jerry Goff, another outstanding musician, preached and sang at First Wesleyan Church in Kings Mountain. James Blackwood's career spans more than fifty years. Born in Mississippi, James, along with his brothers, formed The Blackwood Brothers Quartet, and went on to worldwide fame. He also helped form The Master V Quartet and was a former member. He has the unique distinction of being the most honored singer of all time. He is the third living person to be vot- ed into the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame. He has won nine Grammy Awards and The Gospel Music Association voted him the best male singer for seven consecutive years. He also holds an honorary Degree of Doctor of Music given by Golden State University in Los Angeles, California. This incredible voice heard for over fifty years is still as smooth as ever. One of the most beautiful songs he performs comes from his Hawaiian Albu, The song, "Eternal paradise” makes clear the fact that James Blackwood has not lost any of the sound or clarity of that Sunda | Betty i Goodson amazing voice that has excited gospel fans these many years. James has two sons who also have a ministry. Jimmy, his oldest had a miraculous healing of cancer five years ago and he travels full time preaching and giving his testi- mony. His younger son, Billy spends his time traveling and singing, speaking to youth groups and high school students about drug abuse. He also has a ministry to singles. More on Jerry Goff next week. Featured will be The Royals from Stanley. Refreshments will be served following the service. Rev. Don Denton, pastor, invites the public. The Neil Baird Sunday School Class of Boyce Memorial A.R.P. Church will sponsor its annual chicken pie dinner and yard sale Sat., May 6. Chef Dwain Lynch will be there again to oversee the cooking and, along with others, will serve from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The yard sale begins at 7 a.m. Anyone with items to donate may take them by the church and place them in the room to the left at the entrance to the fellowship hall. Anyone needing help getting items to the church may call Rob Goforth. or Hoyle Mabry. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2.50 for children. They may be purchased from any member of the class or at the door. The menu includes chicken pie, rice and gravy, green beans, con- gealed salad, rolls, tea and dessert. SINGING SET Cherryville Foursquare Gospel Church, located on Delview road, will have a singing on Sunday, April 30, at 7 p.m. The New Beginners from North Wilkesboro and The Bradshaws from Dallas are the featured groups for this special singspiration. WESTOVER SINGING The Fortress Singers of Shelby will be guests at the fifth Sunday night singing at 7 p.m. Sunday at Westover Baptist Church, Kings Mountain. To get to the church, turn right at the first road after passing West Gate Shopping Center on Highway 74 west. FAITH BAPTIST Revival will be held April 30- May 3 at Faith Baptist Church, 1009 Linwood Road, Kings Mountain. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning and night- ly at 7 p.m. Rev. Joe Canipe of Cumberlain, Tn., will be the evan- gelist. He has been preaching for 30 years. He attended Gardner- Webb College and has pastored several area churches, including Mt. Paran, Buffalo Baptist, Thomas Chapel in Cowpens, S.C., and Gaston Baptist in Dallas. The public is invited. There will be special singing each night and a nursery will be in operation. TEMPLE BAPTIST Rev. J.C. Goare, former pastor of Kings Mountain Baptist Church, will fill the pulpit 8S nin. April 30 i at Temple Baptist Church. He will preach at the 11 # am.and 7 REV. GOARE p.m. ser- vices. Rev. Goare was pastor at KM Baptist for 9 1/2 years. He is now retired and living in Shelby. Temple pastor, Rev. Wray Barrett, will be in revival at Unity Baptist Church in Winston Salem. Rev. Earl Pennell, who accepted Christ and the call to preach under Rev. Barrett's ministry, is the pastor at Unity. In his retirement, Rev. Goare is busy filling pulpits, doing supply and interim work, and serving in various volunteer capacities. He is a volunteer chaplain at Cleveland Memorial Hospital, a Hospice vol- unteer, and was appointed by County Commissioners as a mem- ber of the Nursing Homes Advisory Committee. Rev. Goare says the main thing he likes about retirement is that " I can blow my own whistle and punch my own time clock." KINGS MOUNTAIN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION A Sunday School Regional Growth Spiral Conference will be held at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Shelby on April 29 from 9 a.m. un- til 3 p.m. the leader will be Andy Anderson. Those wanting to attend will include pastors, staff ministers, Sunday School directors and teach- ers and workers for all ages.
