As any book lover knows, there is nothing quite like a sale. The rows and rows of books of all varieties and sizes and colors, becons one to sample the riches of knowledge and experience captured within those cov- ers. There are the old books, limber with age and with tell tale marks on the pages, which testify of use. These books have born the weight of years and hold the secrets of other areas and other cultures. How did people think, and how did they look at the world back at the turn of the century, or during the Civil War, or the Revolution. What was going on in the mind of the young soldier who was shipped over to France during World War I to make the world safe for democracy. Uptown At The Library By ROSE TURNER Mauney Memorial Librarian for the sale and welcome any further donations you And how did they feel when their idealism failed to bring the expected result. Our perceptions of the world changes as history marches on, but in the pages of a diary, a memoir, or a novel, we can recapture the atmo- sphere of periods long past. Then there are the newer books. They are stiff and as yet untried, but they call the reader to participate in contemporary thought and to hear the author's point of view on a particular subject. The pages are bright and unmarked as yet. Many of these books will not survive to tell their story to the next generation, but many will live to document the present era for scholars a hundred years from now. The very act of opening the cover and turning the pages of a book brings pleasure. There is the urge to read a paragraph here and skim a page there. Before long you have selected a couple dozen books which you want to read more thoroughly at your leisure.
