Page 4B-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, May 31, 1989 Stars Come Out At Oak Grove... Most of you know about the . Dodgers, but how many know of the L.A. Stars? They're just like the Dodgers...maybe not just like them, but at least they are a ball team, and a pretty good one, too. They defeated Fasco 30-0 last Friday. And, unlike the Dodgers, these are all female players. Team members are Barbara Hayes, Betty White, Cookie Cook, Joy Anderson, Elizabeth Laney, Becky Appling, Leigh Ann Prener, Peggy Ledford, kathy Dover, Kim Bailes, Debbie Fite, Tracy Fortison, Terry Switzer, A.J. Simmons and Susan Briggs. And, speaking of ball games, the Bethware teachers played the fifth graders in softball on field day last Friday. The fifth graders won. Maybe the kids should have spot- ted the teachers a couple of runs. There will be big doings at Oak Grove Baptist Church Saturday--- one of those great church picnics with all of that fantastic food! Those women out there can really cook! Congratulations to Cindy Bullock on her upcoming wedding. Cindy and Eric Fulton will be mar- Oak Grove JUNE BALLARD ried Saturday at 2 p.m. at Chestmut Ridge Baptist Church. Oak Grove Baptist is preparing for Bible School June 5-9. A progress report on Florence White: It seems that she is doing great. "I can't get enough to eat, and I feel fine," she says. Both Florence and Rush traveled to Fallston recently and enjoyed dinner with Bill and Betty Ashley. Florence points out that all but one of her brothers and sisters were present for Memorial Day services at Oak Grove. They included Clyde and Fred Ware, Ethel Kaiser, Sue Lewis and Mary Gibbons. Missing was Frank Ware. If you think you recognized one of the Indians at Tweestie Railroad, you probably did. Ricky White, son of Sesko and Betty White, is working as an Indian at Tweetsie this summer. The school system treated the Kings Mountain bus drivers to a dinner at the Western Steer recent- ly. Congratulations to graduates from Oak Grove, Patterson Grove and Woodbridge: Lisa Blanton, Kent Goodson, Kim Scism, Eric Sparrow, Tim Stewart, Cheryl Bell, Sharon Blanton, Brian Childers, Sandra Grant, Krissy Hine, Larry Stone, Kim Huffstetler, Tonya Hawkins, Robin Watterson, Lee Stepp, Michael Minor, Mike Sever, Gene Ballard, Tonya Pearson jack- son, Joyce Sellers, Davis Putnam, Anita Ware and Angela Huffstetler. WOODBRIDGE June is almost here, and that means another opportunity to win the world famous "Yard of the Month" contest. Once more, we must be on the lookout for Dolly and Rosalyn as they tour Pennsylvania Is Beautiful Country I didn't have a column in last week's paper due to being on vaca- tion. I was surprised and flattered to find that some people actually missed seeing the column. Thanks for your interest. My husband, Roy, and I took a vacation to Lancaster County, Pa. This was cur Jourth visit there. We never tire of the beautiful, peaceful countryside. Being horse lovers, _ SHARON KEARNS ‘Grace Has Homecoming Members of Grace United Methodist Church celebrated homecoming Sunday. Rev. Following the service, church members enjoyed a covered dish meal. The Kings Mountain Senior Center advisory board will hold its monthly meeting June 6 at noon at the Depot. Graduates Are Honored BY JUANITA FLEMING Oak View Baptist Church hon- ored our 1989 graduates at the Sunday worship services. Happy birthday to Justin Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robbie Moore. Mrs. Patsy Williams was hon- ored at a housewarming recently at Oak View Fellowship Hall. Congratulations to Leigh Anne Farris who received the practice award from Mrs. Marshall Gore on May 22. She was recognized in February for National Honors from the National Federation of Music Clubs in piano competition. Several families went to the beach during Memorial Day week- end. Chestnut Ridge BY MYRLE KING we always attend the Martin Brothers Auction. Some of the most beautiful horse drawn car- riages I've ever seen are sold there, as well as other horse-related items. People attend from as far away as Canada, Switzerland and England. When we are not at the auction, Roy and I drive over the , fertile Amish countryside just to see the rolling farm land with its picture perfect crops. Of course, © the Amish do all of their farm work with horses and on this trip we saw them tending the ground with six and seven horses abreast pulling large farm implements behind. The Amish live off the land much like they did a century ago. They do not believe in electricity and other modern conveniences and still get where they are going by horse and buggy. They are a very industrious people and, in addition to their large farms, have some small craft businesses in their homes. One man offers buggy rides to tourists. I am very impressed with the cleanliness of these people. You never see a piece of paper or any trash in the yard, field or along the roadside. Their large homes and barns are set in manicured lawns with flowers everywhere. It is truly a storybook countryside. I would highly recommend Lancaster County, Pa., as a good place for a family vacation. While you are there, vou can visit Gettysburg Battlefield which is only about 25 miles away. Donna Landers was honored at a stork shower Sunday. The shower was given by family and friends in the fellowship hall of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. Donna and her husband, Todd, are expecting their second child in June. Mitchell Todd, their 15-month-old son, was on hand to help open gifts. Wedding bells will be ringing .- Saturday for Cindy Bullock and Eric King.
