Page 6A- age 6A THe KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, May 31, 1989 Deal Street Pool To Open Deal Street Pool opens Saturday for the summer season and public swimming will be permitted from 1 until 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays with Sunday hours for swimming from 1 until 5 p.m. Youth lessons are open to children currently in grades K-9 with Teen Adult lessons open to grades 10- adult. Fees for lessons are pending at this time. Call the Kings Mountain Community Center, 734-0449, for further details on fees and class size limitations. For youth lessons this summer, parents will not be allowed in the pool area each Monday-Thursday so that the children can have an opportunity to develop a strong trust with the instructors. Parents, however, are welcomed and encouraged to attend classes on Fridays as a way of seeing what skills their children have learned. All classes will be conducted by certified Red Cross Lifesaving and WSI staff under current stan- dards. City Recreation David Hancock said that beginning Monday, June 12 swim lessons for youth and adults will get underway. Youth classes will be held from June 12-June 23 from 10 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. The second class will start at 11 a.m. and end at 11:50 a.m. A class for teenagers and adults will be held from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. The second session of summer swim classes will be held from July 10-July 21 on the same class schedule. Soccer Camps Slated At KMJH Two soccer camps are scheduled this summer at Kings Mountain Junior High School. Dan Potter, who was recently named soccer coach at Kings Mountain High, will be the director and will be assisted by Kings Mountain Junior High coach Eric Faust. The first camp will be held June 26-30 from 9 a.m. until noon. It will be for boys and girls in grades seven through 12. The second camp will be held July 31-August 4 and will be for youngsters ages six through sixth grade. The fee for each camp is $25. The event not only recognized the accomplish- ments of the individual swimmers but also celebrated the growth and progress of the club. The addition of Kings Mountain swimmers and hiring of Coach Brian Allen has added depth and made it possible to reach more of Cleveland County's youth. Leading the Shark's swimmers in receiving awards were 10 year old Nathan Mayse of Kings Mountain and 18 year old Amy Allen of Shelby. Both achieved AAAA times in at least one stroke and were selected by N.C. Swimming to its All-Star Team. Mike Sever was recognized for be- ing the top fund-raiser during the recent Swim-A-Thon. Swimmers recognized for post- ing A or better times in at least one strokes were: Jayme Bridges, Christine Brackett, Greer Suttle, Hershey's Track Program Set In Kings Mountain Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department will hold its first Hershey's National Track and Field Youth Program June 10 at 11 a, m. at Kings Mountain High articipant practice day is May 20 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the high school. To register, go by the Kings Mountain Community Center Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Winners of the local meet will advance to regional competition June 24 at 10 a.m. at Shelby High School. The top two places in each event there will advance to the state finals to be held July 14 in Raleigh. Approximately five win- ners at the state meet will be select- ed to participate in the national fi- nals in Hershey, Pa., August 12. The purpose of the Hershey's track and field program is to create a form of recreation and participa- tion for the youth of America. TABLE TENNIS Area table tennis players ages 15 and over are invited to join the Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Table Tennis Club. The club meets on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Community Center. Participants need to take their own table tennis paddles. Goals of the club include learn- ing table tennis skills, organizing tournaments at the community cen- ter, and participating in tourna- ments at other centers.
