Page 2B-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, June 15, 1989 KMHS Athletes On All-SWC Teams Kings Mountain High had one player of the year and a coach of the year on spring minor sports all- conference teams announced today. Brady Goforth, a junior, was the Golf Player of the Year and Denny Hicks was Coach of the Year. Goforth helped lead the Mountaineers to their third straight SWC championship. He won the conference tournament, giving KM the individual champion for three years in a row. He and four of his teammates competed in the state tournament. KM won the confer- ence title by 47 strokes over East All-SWC From Page 1-B he hopes to build on next season. Over his three-year varsity ca- reer, Greene was one of Kings Mountain's most consistent all-time players. He hit over .400 each sea- son, posting a .435 figure this year. He also played a solid third base. Deaton was the most improved player on the Mountaineer squad, going from a .056 batting average last year to 451 this year. He start- ed the season as a pitcher but de- veloped arm problems and switched to the outfield. His speed, both on the basepaths and in the outfield, was a big asset for the Mountaineers. Plonk finished the season with a A438 batting average, 30 runs bat- ted in and 11 home runs. He was leading the team in homers until late in the year when he was in- jured. He stayed out of the lineup for three weeks but returned in time to help lead the Mountaineers to the state championship. Clark reached the pinnacle of coaching in just his first year as head man. His club was never less than second place in the SWC reg- ular season race and posted six straight playoff wins to win the school's first NCHSAA champi- onship. Current stars like All Pro Tight End Ozzie Newsome from Cleveland, David Waymer of New Orleans, Mike Cofer of San Francisco and Tim Kempton of the Charlotte Homets will play. Other notables include Buzz Peterson from the UNC National Championship team of 1982, Terry Gannon from the NC State National Championship team of 1983, Heavyweight Boxer James "Bonecrusher” Smith, Major League slugger Richie Zisk and several members of the Charlotte Knights. All the proceeds from the three days of fun and entertainment will go to benefit the following area charities; Thompsons Children's Home, Partner's Therapeutic Riding Center, Salvation Army Boys/Girls Cubs, Fred Kennedy Campus-Elon Homes for Children, Hargett Fund and St. Vincent's. The fun begins on June 17, with a celebrity softball game, followed by the Knights vs. Greenville game at Knights Castle. The golf tourna- ment will be played on June 18 & 19 at the Fort Mill Golf Club and Crystal Springs Golf Club with Holiday Inn Carowinds as the host hotel. Playing spots are still available through the Knights office at 332- 3746 (NC) or 548-8051 (SC). Gallery tickets are $3.00 for both days and are available at Hooters Restaurant on Independence Blvd. or through the Knights office. American Legion Tourney Slated The 19th annual American Legion Post 155 Dick McGinnis Memorial Golf Tournament will be played Sat.,June 24, at Kings Mountain Country Club. Entry fee is $30 per member and golfers can sign up at the American Legion. The fee includes a day of golf and dinner and dancing after the tournament. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and dancing will follow from 9 un- til midnight at American Legion Post 155. Door prizes and trophies will be awarded during the evening. Rutherford. Joining Goforth on the All- Conference team were teammates Brad Wilson, Rusty Bumgardner and Ryan Broadwell. Kings Mountain placed three players on the All-SWC softball team. Chosen were catcher Alice Owens, first baseman Paula Morris and outfielder Velma Degree. Angie Wyatt and Earl Lingafeldt of South Point were player and coach of the year. Kings Mountain placed two on the All-SWC girls track team. Adrienne Woods, who finished sixth in the state, was all-SWC in the shot put and Tracy Ward Bell was selected in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Ryan Hollifield made the All- SWC boys track team in the 1600 meter run and 1600 meter relay. He was joined on the 1600 meter relay team by Audia Spencer, Victor Bell and D.J. Williams. Antwione Welcome of North Gaston was boys player of the year in track and Chad Maddox was player of the year in field. Coaches of the year were David Smith and Greg Isenhour of East Rutherford. Girls players of the year were Charlotte Smith of Shelby in track and Nicky Frady of South Point in field. Coaches of the year were Chris Norman of Shelby and Ben Best of North Gaston. H.S. Keeter Jr., at Keeter Ford in Shelby is shown receiving from Ford Motor Company's executive, Tom Cornellier, the Ford Motor Company Distinguished Achievement Award for quality commitment. BRUCE CLARK Coach Of The Year KM Wins Wachovia Cup Kings Mountain High School ran away with the Wachovia Cup in the Southwestern 3-A Conference this year. The cup is given each year to the school which has the best overall athletic program as determined by a point system. The Mountaineers grabbed the lead during the fall sports season, thanks to a first ever conference championship in girls tennis and high finishes in other fall sports, and held it throughout the year. Mountaineer teams this year won championships in girls tennis, volleyball, softball, and golf, and improved their final standing in ev- ery sport over the previous year. VACATION TIME SJ {EN KEETER MOTORS XU Final standings in the race for the Wachovia Cup were Kings Mountain 109 1/2, East Rutherford 96, Shelby 92 1/2, R-S Central 83 1/2, South Point 83, North Gaston 80 1/2, Chase 65 1/2, and Burns 56 12. At the end of the winter sports season, KM had 57 points to 51 for R-S, 49 for Shelby, 47 1/2 for East, 45 for South Point, 38 1/2 for North Gaston, 35 1/2 for Chase and 34 1/2 for Burns. Kings Mountain was able to widen its final margin because of a first place finish 1n golf, tie for first in softball, sec- | onds in tennis and baseball, and third and fourth place finishes in girls and boys track, respectively.
