They built a brick beau- ty shop building where the former Whitworth residence had stood. Later, they sold the shop building to Allen McNeal who razed it to make the location into a parking lot for McBess Industries, Inc. In 1963, the Whitworths built a lake house at Paradise Point on Lake Wylie. Three years later, she was hired to set up the cosmetology depart- ment at Kings Mountain High School. When Mrs. Whitworth was hired as cosmetologist for the Kings Mountain School System, not many people in Bessemer City knew what the term meant and fewer than that could pronounce the word or spell it! Fourteen years ago, the Whitworths made their lake home their permanent home and their on- ly child Sandie and her husband Gay Stinnett Jr. and three children, Ashton, Adrian and Toscha, moved into their Maryland Avenue brick: house. Until Bain Whitworth suffered a heart attack sixteen years ago, he had operated Bessemer City Furniture Company that he had purchased from the late W.K. Gladden. He returned to his former employment as district manager for a cylinder gas company for two years before he retired and the Whitworths made their move to Paradise Point. "Living there meant I drove 50 miles each day to Kings Mountain and back," commented Mrs. Whitworth. Mrs. Whitworth's job for the past twenty-three years has been a 12-month per year employment and did not include a lengthy sum- mer vacation period that public school teachers enjoy. That has re- sulted in her driving 50 miles to AND OPENI EE’S chiLorens cLothing: 5 are (Next To Big Lots) 7¢ Register For A FREE BEACH TRIP! "I leave home for school at 6:45 a.m. each day and some days I have stayed until 7 o'clock or later, especially on lab days." She point- ed out. "In my twenty-three years, I have spent so many hours at Kings Mountain High School that it seems like my home." Lillian's "home" folks have been letting her know they are sad to see her leave her school home. On Awards Day, a group of her former students got together and presented her a dozen red roses, an engraved plaque and a diamond ring that is set with 20 diamonds. Former students were not the on- ly ones who appreciated Mrs. Whitworth's contributions to the high school. Her peers and admin- istration and school board mem- bers presented her with the Schussler Award that is given to an educator or community leader who has contributed to education. Along with their gifts, Mrs. Whitworth noted, "I have received some flower arrangements and a lot of personal notes." She has also been honored by a host by different groups. At the end of school, the high school has participated in a series of end of the year social functions that included a luncheon , honors banquet, breakfast and a dessert hour. For the dessert social that took place on the last day of the formal school year for teachers, she was presented a corsage and a flower arrangement for the serving table, gifts from her Bessemer City friends. "I got my first 'apple for the teacher’ on the last day that I taught,” she laughingly pointed out. "I don't know what I will do when I do retire," she commented. She added, "I do know one thing - I am NOT going to clean house on Saturdays" a statement that all working women can relate to! 5 (EY LSE es Boys Shorts and Tops From $3.99 | ASSORTED BOYS & GIRLS SIZE 8-16 DRESSES & SUITS 50% OFF DRESSES ¢ SHORTS © PANTS © SUN VISORS * SOCKS eo LITTLE BOYS SUITS « BONNETS ¢ SANDALS © SWIM SUITS e FRILLY DRESSES * MATCHING BOWS ¢ STUFFED TOYS ¢ BABY GIFTS * TIGHTS eo CHIL- ?
