KM Team To Play In Utah Kings Mountain's 12-under AAU basketball team is getting ready to go to Salt Lake City, Utah for the National AAU Tournament. Kings Mountain finished second in the nation as 11-year-olds in 1988. The team has two All- Americans returning in Jovan Bell and Ian Adams. "I have been contacted by ESPN to interview the team,” said Coach Danny McDowell. "This is a big event for the guys." While in Salt Lake City, the team will participate in many other activities, including water sports, aerial team rides into the snow- covered mountains, and a Fourth of July celebration. The team will leave Friday from Charlotte Airport and arrive back on Sat., July 8. : Kings Mountain earned the right to play in the National Tournament by finishing second in the recent State Tournament in Concord. Kings Mountain was in pool play with Gastonia and Avery County, defeating Gastonia 56-24 and Avery County 98-40. Against Gastonia, Jovan Bell scored 12 points, Sharee Hopper 11 and Jason Rayford and Tank Roseboro 10 each. Against Avery County, Bell scored 30, Rayford 16, Hopper 14, Roseboro 12 and Robert Williams 10. Kings Mountain defeated the Charlotte Sonics 64-36 in the semi- finals as Bell scored 20 points, Hopper 18 and Rayford 14. In the championship game, KM fell to the Charlotte Royals 48-43, but then bounced back to whip Gastonia 66-41 for second place. Against Charlotte, Hopper led the way with 18 points and Bell had 14. Against Gastonia, Bell had 21 and Roseboro 16. Team members are Ian Adams, Jovan Bell, Sharee Hopper, Jamaine Kilgore, Jason Rayford, Terence Roseboro, Darius Stinson and Robert Williams. East From Page 1-A "This would be held outside of the school day," McRae said. "We've been working on this for some time in an effort to not have such a detrimental effect on the kids academically, as well as recognition of the fact that one of the things we should be doing is edu- cating them on the harmful side effects of drugs and alcohol." McRae said the CODAP program would be offered to first-time offenders only. Others would face the usu- al school discipline procedures. The board will also discuss, and possibly award bids, on some construction at the junior and senior high schools. The system opened bids for new con- struction and alterations at the junior high, and con- struction of a new auxiliary gym at the high school during the past week and a half. Bids for new class- rooms at the senior high are to be opened today. Some of the mechanical and electrical work has had to be re-advertised because the board did not receive enough bids, McRae said. "By Monday, we should have opened all the bids on the middle school work," McRae said. "We're very pleased with the bids at this point, and we feel like, at this point and time, we would anticipate that we'd be able to move right ahead with our projects." The board will also officially approve its operating budget for the 1989-90 fiscal year as well as amend the current year's budget. School lunch prices and food services contracts will also be considered. The board met in special session Wednesday morn- ing to consider a bid of $147,820 from Webster Environmental for asbestos abatement at North School. The board had approved a bid of $100,085 from Napry at last week's meeting, but Napry had to later withdraw that bid because it did not have the ap- propriate contractor's license. Webster's bid was the second lowest received. NIKE WEEK JUST DO IT. JUST DO IT. JUST DO IT. JUST DOIT.
