Anxiety Dangerous One minute you're envisioning the future as bright and hopeful. The next minute your thoughts quickly turn to the reality of the day's problems: children, work and bills. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, you begin to feel fearful of your surroundings. Your heart be- gins to beat faster and faster and you become apprehensive. A doc- tor later tells you that you have ex- perienced an anxiety attack. Anxiety attacks, also referred to a panic attacks, happen frequently. For many people around the world, 4 million to 10 million in the United States alone, such attacks strike with little warning and for no specific reason. Symptoms of an anxiety attack may include any or all of the fol- lowing: lightheadedness, dizziness, rubbery legs, a racing, palpitating heart, a choking feeling, a tingling sensation and changes in mental perception. Attacks usually last ten to thirty minutes or, in rare in- stances, for many hours. Anxiety attacks occur more fre- quently in women than in men, and most often begin in the teens for early twenties. Formed in 1951, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is a pri- vate, not-for-profit, voluntary orga- nization created by and composed of health care professionals dedi- cated to promoting and improving the quality of health care. Accreditation by Joint Commission is voluntary on the part of the hospital, however, being accredited guarantees the commu- nity that its hospital is maintaining its commitment to excellence in health care. John E. Milton, director of the Joint Commission's Hospital Accreditation Program said, "The Kings Mountain community should be proud that Kings Mountain Hospital is focusing on the most challenging goal: to continually raise quality to higher levels." When Joint Commission survey- ors survey a hospital, they check each aspect of a department ac- cording to health standards set by the Joint Commission. Joint Commission has hundreds of stan- dards that cover everything from the quality assurance program, to a staff's credentials, to the safety of the building. "Above all, the national stan- dards mandate that attention be a top-level activity that permeates the entire organization," said Mr. Milton. “As an example, the quali- ty assurance standards expect health professionals to use indica- tors of quality to monitor and eval- uate all areas of clinical care." The accreditation process is comprised of three parts, written proof of compliance with stan- dards; verbal information concern- ing the practice of standards; and on-site observations by Joint Commission surveyors. When standards are being met to the sat- isfaction of the surveyors, accredi- tation is granted. Kings Mountain Hospital Administrator, Huitt Reep, spoke of his pride in a staff whose mem- bers asked what needed to be done to be accredited by the Joint Commission. "In addition, they ap- preciated the educational aspect of the survey and the opportunity to interact with the team of survey- ors." Mr. Reep called the accredita- tion, "proof of-an organization- wide commitment to provide quali- ty health care." Learn To Drive!
