mark, over 100 children have completed the minimum
requirements for receiving a certificate. Those children
who have read six books or. more and have brought
their logs in to be checked and stamped, will be grati-
fied to find their names up on the bulletin board at the
front entrance. :
We still have a lot of fun planned for the remaining
weeks of the Summer Program. Carowinds discount
coupons will be available the last of the month, as well
as discount coupons for Busch Gardens in
Williamsburg, Virginia. Even more exciting, Gail
Haley, Caldecott Award winning author/illustrator will
be with us on July 28, and will demonstrate her artistic
techniques as well as tell stories. Ms. Haley specializes
in Appalachian folk tales and reinterprets them for
modern children. She is particularly interested in the
Jack Tales. :
The teen workshops for the remaining weeks in-
clude a creative writing session and a program on hair
styles. The creative writing workshop on July 18, will
be presented by the Gaston Area Writer's Group. those
young people interested in attending the session will
want to bring a sample of their writing with them. Hair
styles, on July 25, will be presented by Janice Phifer of
Country Settings. The teen workshops have increased
in popularity as the summer progresses and more
young people are participating in the program.
The focus of the Summer Reading Club, however, is
reading and literature. The classes for the various ages
include games, work sheets, crafts and other projects,
but all of the activities are related to books and litera-
ture.
Books are the heart and soul of the library. Although
we have added audiovisuals and other supplemental
materials, nothing can take the place of the printed
page. It is important that we instill a love of reading in
our children at an early age, preferably in the pre-
school years, so that they will make it a lifetime habit.

Research has indicated that children who are read to
frequently in the first four years so life will almost cer-
tainly become avid readers as adults. It is therefore im-
perative that we reach children before they start to
school and introduce them to the pleasures of books.
Many times a child who has enjoyed books at a
younger age will drift away as they reach the middle
and teen years. There are so many activities and recre-
ational opportunities which compete for the child's at-
tention. The programs at the library attempts to refocus
attention on reading as pleasurable and introduce the
young person to literature which will stretch his mind,
stimulate his intellect, and expand his horizons.
The theme of this year's Summer Reading Club,
"On Beyond Reading," is open-ended and leaves the
reader free to pursue his own interests. There are no
limits when one enters the world of books and allows
the imagination to soar above the ordinary concerns of
everyday life. At thie same time, books can help the
reader to better understand life and the world in which
he lives.
As the summer draws to a close, we will be award-
ing certificates and prizes for top readers. However,
the lasting rewards of the program come from the sat-
isfaction of reading itself. The things you read become
a part of you, and no one can take it away from you.
