This was a time of praise and thanksgiv- ing. Sam and Brenda Blanton hosted members of the congregation at a July 4th picnic and celebration at their home. Several members of GA's will be going to camp July 24-28. Jackie Porter is receiving the health forms of those girls planning to attend the event. The third Saturday breakfast will be held at David Baptist Church on Saturday from 6 until 10 a.m. The public is invited to enjoy a country breakfast with all the trimmings. "Kids Alive" will meet Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the church. . Young people of the church will hold a dog wash on July 22 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church. Youth of the church are planning a trip to Carowinds on July 17. Wendy Te Their special style of music and humor have won Wendy Bagwell and The-Sunliters world wide ac- claim as well as many distin- guished awards, including the gold "Addy" and the silver and bronze "Telly" awards for the "Best TV Commercial of the Year" in their "Snapback with Stanback" ad cam- paign, a national award from Advertising Age. Also, Wendy won the prestigious "Entertainer of the Year" award at the 1986 National Quartet Convention held in Nashville, Tennessee. Wendy Bagwell is an ex-Marine and a successful businessman who is a natural comedian. He is at best while "spinning his yarns" about unusual and amusing situations the group experiences in their interna- tional travels. According to him, "Other entertainers experience some of these same situations but they just have more sense than to get on stage and tell about them." Not so with with Wendy! His ren- ditions of stories from childhood and the groups experiences as they travel have captured the hearts and tickled the funny bones of millions of people around the world. Jerri Morrison and Jan Buckner . are the ladies whose voices blend 0 beautifully together. Jerri plays tambourine and other percussion instruments. She has been with Wendy for about 31 years. Jan came along about three years later. Jan plays the piano and can also CHARLES McSWAIN Charles Celebrates Birthday Charles Allen McSwain cele- brated his fourth birthday Thursday, June 15, at a Mickey Mouse party given at Bolin's Day Care. Friends at the Day Care in the four to five-year-old class attended the party and enjoyed cake, potato chips and drinks. Attending were Lenny Matthews, Lee Bolin, Ashe Fowler, Jennifer Moore, Jake Lowery, Trey Chappell, Buddy Black, Meghann Childers, Mandy Rhyne, D.J. Perry, Travis Robinson, Ashley Smith, Trent Redmond, Zack Barger and Litisha Bell. Charles also had a party at home that afternoon with his family. Charles is the son of Marilyn and Keith McSwain of Kings Mountain. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Banks Rumfelt of Mount Holly and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby McSwain of Shelby. Charles has a sister, Kristy McSwain, age six. Activities Scheduled In Kings Mountain Area Churches Bride-elect Renee Rector was honored at a bridal shower hosted by members of the congregation on Sunday afternoon in the Fellowship Hall. A "Wishing Well" featured the shower and guests gave detergent, dish cloths, clean- ing supplies, etc. in addition to shower gifts. The wedding colors of mauve and blue were featured in the decorations. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Vacation Bible School will end Friday at noon after a busy week of activities for children. She has received the Southern Gospel Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year Award on two separate occa- sions. She and Wendy write or ar- range all of the music for the group. Matt Mundy and Kevin Williams complete the band, and together, play seven different in- struments. The group had been singing to- gether for about 10 years and were recording for RCA when the biggest milestone in their career came about, and it was a first for any gospel group. Marvin Norcross (founder of Canaan Records) was always coming to their concerts and he loved the story Wendy told about the time the group was invit- ed to sing at a church that handled Mike Ledford. Charles Wilson was bus driver and Kathy Murgita, Susan Belt, Lillian Boheler, Frances Leonard, Don Hanks and Kristina Krieger directed a pro- gram of arts and crafts. First Baptist young people are joining in the Kingdom 1989 trip to Orlando, Fla. this month. Hospice training is underway on every Monday night through Aug. 28 at Shelby Chamber of Commerce, 100 S. Lafayette St., Shelby. Volunteers are needed from Kings Mountain since a large num- ber of patients live in this area. Attendance at the training classes, from 7 until 9 p.m., doesn't obli- gate one to be a volunteer. Contact June Lee for more information. Christian sympathy is extended to the family of Ruby Greene, to the family of Peggy Adams and to Lillian Boheler at the death of her nephew, Timothy Deece. CENTRAL METHODIST A church-wide picnic was held Wednesday at Lake Montonia and a large group attended. Is A Good Tale poisonous rattlesnakes as a part of their services. Wendy never could get the powers-that-be at RCA ex- cited enough to record the humor- ous tale. When the RCA contract expired, the group signed with Norcross' Canaan label and record- ed "Here Come The Rattlesnakes." The rest is history. The album hit the nation's coun- try charts and The Sunliters are the only singers in their field to gross over a million and win a Gold Record for the "Rattlesnakes" al- bum. From the Southern Gospel Music Association they have re- ceived the Pioneer Award, The al- bum o the Year Award in 19861 and in 1984 Wendy was inducted into the Hall of Fame. I received a letter from Wendy recently and he gave me an update - on the group. He said they had just finished a two day concert at Opryland where they broke all records with six thousand people in attendance each day. He also men- tioned that their latest video, "The Snakes and Old Ralph Bennett" is a top seller. "What's That Name" is the title of their latest album. Traveling seven days a week, they perform nightly during the summer tour. Concerts are held in churches, auditoriums, outdoor are- nas, military bases and hospitals. This year the two tours of the NewLight Singers and Orchestra will travel about 16,000 miles as they visit throughout 31 states. Dan Bashor, director of NewLight Ministries headquar- tered in Loveland, Colorado, has composed, arranged and directed musicals that have performed throughout North America and Europe. His work also included record albums and television spe- cials. Auditions and interviews will be held after the concert for singers, instrumentalists and technical staff.
