My, My! Where Has All The Time Gone?
Tick! Tick! Tick! Tock! I still
have time on my mind. What is
time? Was there time before "in the
beginning?" Now and then some-
one will ask quite wonderingly,
"Where did the time go?" Where
does the time go? We're never
without time even if you think you
don't have enough time.
God said, "Let there be light."
There was light. God was pleased
and separated the light from dark-
ness. God named the light "day"
and the darkness "night." Evening
passed and morning came. That
was day one. Now we have hours,
minutes, seconds, weeks, months,
years, decades, scores, centuries.
Even a twinkling of an eye is a
way of describing a time range.
Early folks didn't fret about
time. They got up when morning
came and went to bed when it was
evening. As time went by people
began to live in groups and for
some reason needed to know more
specifically what time it was. One
way of telling was by where the
shadows fell, and by the sun, moon
and stars. The sun dial was proba-
bly the first time piece. The oldest
known is a 3,500 year old sundial
made in Egypt.
. The history of clocks and calcn-
dars make for a good pastime. The
passing of time is what makes his-
tory--good or not so good. No mo-
ment or twinkling is ever the same.
We can't turn back the clock, but
let's keep winding.
In 1957 Joel was with me in
tellers than are chickens and roost-
ers. Roosters just crow at dawn,
and, of course, when whatever else
it is about which they have to crow.
Our cats know when it is 4 a.m.
and 3 p.m. We have two part-time
house cats--more part-time in cold
weather, less in hot. Anthony is a

there for health purposes. The three
ol us would go riding to ncarby
sight-sccing places. Mama was
learning the 90th Psalm by heart.
By heart says more to me than
memorizing. Joe was mama's
prompter. She learned it word for
word. This is a good Psalm with
which to associate time. It talks of
all gencrations--before creation--
from everlasting to everlasting--a
thousand ycars as a yesterday--the
night--the morning--three score
and ten--fourscorc--carly--how
long?--all our days. I did not mem-
orize all the words at the time, but
through the years since then at
some time or the other all the
words have become timely. The
12th verse is like the tide. It keeps
coming in--"So teach us to number
our days, that we may apply our
hearts unto wisdom." Mama's days
were three score and twelve.
I believe cats are better time

dumpy, plump, black and white.
When Glenn gets up early in the
a.m., Lila and Anthony are waiting
to come in for a snack time. Then
they snooze until I come in and get
by bowl out for the high fiber cere-
al (whatever has the best coupon)
and low fat 2% milk. They know
they'll get some milk. One morning
when we were out of milk I had
some sour cream and, not wanting
to disappoint the cats, I gave them
a glob of sour cream. Anthony
went lap, lap, lap with his usual
vigor and then queryingly turned
his green/yellow eyes up at me--
"what is this stuff? He looked back
at Lila, who was lapping happily
away, so he took two or three more
slow, long, cautious laps and then
cleaned his plate and wanted more.
After many years of being on
time at the Grover Medical Clinic,
Ethel Spangler has hung up the ‘ole
time clock. Happy times to you,
Ethel!
They all came back! We always
do. Olie came back from Texas--
Joe, Patsy, Katy, Josh and Emily
from Oklahoma and Monroe and
Joe and Patsy from Fort Fisher,
Holly from Sunset Beach and Paul
and Holly from Conover--John,
Punkin’, Philip, Brandy, Sissy,
Mary Marlowe from the beach--
Margie and Ben's daughter, Jane,
came back to see them. Zip hopes
Dr. Bob Patterson will be down to
see her. Margaret Caruthers had
relatives coming back to see her all
week. Maria and Kelli Harry visit-
ed with Philip in Alabama.
Bill and Katherine Harry and
Mrs. Bonebrake visited Ann and
Jane Hambright in Colorado and
Susan Meares in New Mexico.
Mrs. Bonebrake, the grandmother,
reported a really good time with
each of these girls.
Wray and Janet Goforth finally
came back too. Since they moved
to Columbus, Ga., this is a rarity.
They said they had a good, good
preacher in Columbus which
makes up in some way for not
spending time with the Grover
home folks.
