Gordon Edwards To Coach
First Mountie Swim Team
Gordon Edwards, Kings
Mountain High's first swimming
teacher-coach, says he hopes to ac-
complish a lot in his first year at
the school. But that doesn't neces-
sarily mean the Mountaineers will
win a lot of swim meets.
"I look forward to the chal-
lenge," says Edwards, who will
take over his duties here in August.
"The first thing I'd like to
accomplish is to get to know ev-
erybody in the community and get
the swimming program off to a
good start. Getting athletes to par-
ticipate in the sport and progress
and work hard, and not just wins
and losses, will make the program
a success. I'd like to invite every-
body interested in swimming to

At present, Edwards is an exer-
cise physiologist at Piedmont
Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C.
He has been out of the teaching
profession for about 10 years but
he has several years experience in
teaching and coaching swimming
in California, Texas, New York and
North Carolina. Hé resides in
Charlotte with his wife, the former
Melba Smith of Shelby, and their
two children, Mark, 6, and Marta,
9.
"We're trying to sell our home
and re-locate in Kings Mountain,"
said Edwards. "My wife is from
Shelby and we're very familiar
with this area. We look forward to
living in Cleveland County and be-
ing closer to the children’s grand- |
parents." i

olds) all-stars won their first two
games in the District Tournament
and were scheduled to play for the
sub-district title last night at West
Lincoln Optimist Club Park.
The KM team, which defeated
host West Lincoln 11-6 Saturday
and Stanley 3-0 Monday, was to
play the winner of the East
Lincoln-Stanley game last night.
The winner of that game will play
the winner of the other sub-district,
probably Bessemer City, in a best-
of-three series for the district
crown and the right to play in the
state tournament beginning July 22
in Chadburn. Pndent dawson:
The local entry has gotten good
hitting, pitching and defense in
games thus far. Saturday night, KM
struck for six runs in the first in-
ning to break the game open early.
After Brad Hawkins opened the
game with a walk, Andy Ross
reached on a bunt single and
Wesley Bridges followed with a
home run to make the score 3-0.
Brad Leonard walked and Jeremy
Regan singled, and an out later Bo
Walker doubled home two runs to
make it 5-0. With two outs, Walker
scored when Brad Oliver hit a long
double to the left-center field
fence.
Kings Mountain was in control
the rest of the game. The host team
managed six runs in the late in-
nings to cut the final margin to 11-
6.
Leonard, Bridges and Rusty
Putnam each pitched two innings
for Kings Mountain. Sean Sellers
' had one hit and Jason Putnam and
Ricky Southard scored runs in the
fifth inning to close out the scoring
for KM.
In what was the best defensive
game of the tournament so far,
Kings Mountain blanked a strong
Stanley team 3-0 Monday. Leonard
District Major Leagues
pitched six shutout innings, gave
up only one hit and struck out 10
Stanley batters.
Kings Mountain scored two runs
in the bottom of the third. Bo
Walker led off with a walk and
Jeremy Cooke entered the game as
a pinch-runner. Cooke advanced to
second on a passed ball. When the
Stanley second baseman couldn't
handle a hard hit ball by Sellers,
Cooke scored. With one out,
Hawkins singled sharply to left and
Sellers scored to make it 2-0.
Kings Mountain added its final
run in the fifth. Hunter Suber led
off with a walk. An out later,
Wesley Bridges walked. Both run.
ners advanced on a passed ball.
Suber was caught off third by a
good defensive play by Stanley but
Bridges later stole home after
drawing a throw to third from the
Stanley catcher.
The KM team has 13 players
and two alternates (Collin Goforth
and Paul Johnsonbaugh).
