Edwards
From Page 5-A
Mrs. Edwards’ father, Rev.
Ernest Smith, was pastor of Dover
+ Baptist Church in Shelby for about
30 years. He and his wife, now re-
tired; still live in Shelby: "We've al-
<eady told them to expect us for
inday dinner every week after we
ove to Kings Mountain,"
In addition to his teaching and
Awoaching duties at the high school,
3 will teach swimming to at
least one elementary grade (proba-
bly the fifth this coming school
year) and will serve as athletic
trainer during the football season.
Edwards is a native of New York
and attended New York State
University. After serving four years
in the U.S. Marines, he returned to
New York to teach and later re-
ceived his doctorate at the
University of New Mexico at
Albequerque.
He taught at the University of
Nevada-Las Vegas and Campbell
University in Buies Creek and
moved to Charlotte 10 years ago
after taking a job as physical fit-
ness coordinator for the Charlotte
Fire Department.
While in college, he swam for
Dr. James Councilman, who left
New York for Indiana University
where he coached seven straight
NCAA championships.
In his first year at KMHS, he
said he'll look for a good nucleus
on which to build a strong swim
program.
"We'll look for improvement,
both individually and as a team,”
he said. "I understand the Sharks
program is going to be a good
feeder program for us." Edwards
said he may work some with the
Sharks in the future.
"As far as our competition, I
don't know anything at this point,
although T do understand Shelby
will be our big rival," he said.
"There aren't many schools in
North Carolina that have swim-
ming pools, so we will probably
have to swim against some 2-A
and some 4-A teams."
Edwards hopes a lot of young-
sters from the junior and senior
highs come out for the swim team.
"I would like to see swimmers be
accomplished in all the strokes and
not just limit themselves to two or
three strokes," he said.
Edwards said he has been im-
pressed with the KMHS pool facil-
ity and with the people he's met on
visits here this summer.
"As for the pool and deck, it's
very adequate for our needs," he
said. "I would like to see some
more locker space, though. As for
the people, I think the thing that
has impressed me the most was
their friendliness. When we came
up here for an interview, Ronnie
Wilson, director of personnel for
the school system, took us in his
car and drove us around and
showed us places that we could
live, and so on. That's something
that you just don't find in many
school districts, but everybody's
been so helpful. We came up here
one Sunday and went to church
anc everybody was real friendly."
