"Let Us Go Into The House TEMPLE BAPTIST 612 N. CANSLER ST. KiNGs MouUNTAIN, N.C. Rev. Wray G. Barrett Interim Pastor The actual birth of Temple Baptist Church goes back to March 4, 1945 with twenty- five charter members in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Huffstetler at 307 Walker Street. The Reverend D.F. Putnam was the first pastor and served until his death on September 14, 1947. The Church was accepted into the Kings Mountain Baptist Association on October 25, 1945. Construction of the first unit of the buildings was begun early in 1946, with the first service being held in the building on July 21, 1946. The first sanctuary was completed in 1948 and used for the first service on August 29, of that year while The Reverend Rank Monroe was pastor. The third building program which was an educational unit consisting of 14 rooms, was started under the leadership of The Reverend Jack Weaver in 1959. The fourth, and last, building program was begun in October, 1970 and completed in August, 1971. The $210,000 program consisted of tearing down the first unit built in 1946, erecting a three-story structure on the site of the first building, adding a second story to the unit built in 1959, and building a new sanctuary. The total church property is valued at $700,000. From the very start, Temple has been a Southern Baptist Church with a strong emphasis on Missions. In 1962, The Reverend McGaha led the church to adopt two foreign missionaries, of whom Miss Anita Coleman continues to serve in Japan. With a present membership of 450, Temple has, in addition to two Sunday worship services, Sunday School, Church Training, W.M.U., Acteens, G.A.'s, R.A.'s, Mission Friends, and Adult Choir. Among the many goals, the Church has achieved through the years, she is proud of being able to pay $7,800 for a new organ in December 1974; $2,750 for a mini bus in January, 1975; $18,164.41 for the Humphries property in February, 1977; $9,602.08 for a fifteen-passenger bus in July, 1978, and $6,869.76 for paving the parking lot and installing security lights. After selling the parsonage for $36,500 in January, 1979, the church was able to become debt-free and have money left over. Because of God's rich blessings upon Temple Church, many a person has begun his Christian life under her ministry; thousands of dollars have been sent by her to our mission fields; scores of Kings Mountain families have been helped by her with money, groceries, meals, clothes, medicine, fuel, and in other ways. No one can deny that Temple has been filled with color, excitement, blessings, and challenges. Much has been accomplished for the glory of God, but the future looks even brighter and even more exciting. In explaining the accomplishments of Temple Church, the credit must go first of all to the goodness and grace of our Lord, and secondly to a people who have attempted to "look on the fields which are white unto the harvest." : Our Houses Of Worship Are God's Institutions For Reforming Human Lives.
