Se pe ag Si : 2 sa Putnam Celebrates Birthday Lela Hord Putnam celebrated her 92nd birthday Saturday, July 22. She was honored at a birthday dinner Wednesday at her home on Putnam Lake Road. A native of Lawndale, Mrs. Putnam is widow of Lawrence Putnam. She had seven children, four of whom are living, 16 grand- children and 16 great-grandchil- dren. Children of Mrs. Putnam are Lloyd Putnam, Lib Rayfield, Bobby Putnam and Craven Putnam. Brothers and sisters of Mrs. Putnam joined in the birthday cele- bration. They were Lucretia Norman, Edna Hord, Gazzie Putnam, Forrest Hord, George Hord and Russell Hord. A decorated birthday cake cen- tered the buffet table. Otis Whitehurst and his three daughters, Bessie, Amanda and Lauren, attended services at Long Creek Sunday with Otis' other, Lida Whitehurst. They were here from Williston, Vermont to attend the Ormand family reunion, "The Old Furnace Picnic," which is held the last Saturday in July. Becky Whitehurst and her son also attended services at Long Creek. She is the wife of Rufus Whitehurst. Rufus has just finished a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force in Germany. He will now be stationed at Hampton, Virginia. Marie and Stormy Neal made a "tour" of the mountains last Sunday. they visited Tweetsie Railroad, drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville and returned to Kings Mountain by way of Chimney Rock. They covered a lot of territory in one day! Long Creek FRANCES WILSON Ben, Jeanette, Justin and Jacob Wilson spent Sunday at Carowinds with Jeanette's sister Judy Bates. They boys has a grand time riding everything they could. Justin was their "official" guide at the park as he had visited there about a month ago with one of his friends. Nathan and Sherry Wheeler are the proud parents of a son, Patrick Nathan, who was born July 23. Nathan was the Summer Intern at Long Creek in 1987. He is still a student at Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Eva is the old- er sister in that family of 10 Hager children. Beth's daughter and her husband Steve Neal operate the 66 Restaurant, but they were not there that day to visit with the Hager family. They had gone to Southport to watch their son Derrick play baseball with an All-Star team. In my account of the All-Star baseball game in which Brian Center of the Chestnut Ridge Road played, I failed to mention that Brian was chosen "Most Valuable Player" in the All-Star series. Sorry I missed that important part of the story. Gerald Lee of the Oak View community had his 75th birthday July 24. He is one of our senior cit- izens and we really appreciate him. He stays very active with his beau- tiful and plentiful garden and has his family and church foremost on his mind. Many happy returns, Gerald. Leigh Hord had a birthday July 26 and Kenneth Metcalf celebrated his birthday July 30. Kenny Childers celebrated his third birthday July 30. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Childers. Rev. Robbie Moore, Debbie and boys are back from a vacation at Myrtle Beach. The Oak View Young at Heart met yesterday and planned a September trip to Helen, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. Broadus Linderman visited over the week- * end with Mr. and Mrs. John Linderman and children in Raleigh. The Fleming family hosted a family dinner at their home Sunday. Sixteen people attended. The Oak View Baptist men will meet Sunday, August 6 at 7:30 a.m. in the church fellowship hall.
