Spring's gone, but state pride made dogwoods bloom on new postage stamps in Kings Mountain and Grover Wednesday as part of a state-wide celebration of the 200th anniversary of Tar Heel statehood. The U. S. Postal Service re- leased the new stamp on Wednesday which commemorated North Carolina's entry into the union two centuries ago. Kings Mountain postal workers dressed up in colonial-style and Tom Lattimore came from the National Park Service dressed up mountaineer-style. There were dis- plays of crafts, including quilts and churns, and banjo and guitar pick- ing by Jerry and Steve Edmonson. Amber Dotson, 6, daughter of Pam and Tim Hayes and a student of Vickie Arrowood Dance School, delighted visitors with clogging and tapdancing routines. After presentation of the colors, Postmaster Tom Howard took the occasion to present statehood stamps to State Senator J. Ollie Harris and Mayor Kyle Smith and City Manager George Wood. Mayor Smith presented the post- master with a framed proclamation. The celebration didn't end until after cake, shaped like the white dogwood flower against a black background, was served with Mountain Dew. There were also lapel pins, coffee mugs, T-shirts and other souvenir items. At Grover Postoffice, Postmaster Fain Hambright took the occasion to present the new stamps to Mayor W. W. McCarter and County Commissioner Charlie Harry and Mrs. Hambright served punch and refreshments from a red, white and blue decorated table in the foyer of the post office.
