‘KM Streaks Past Mustangs © Thursday hl ii September 14, 1989 Kings V ntan ‘Horal SPORTS Section Ross Scores Three If Kings Mountain football fans thought they were seeing streaks before their eyes at Friday's non- conference game at East Lincoln, it's because they were. The streak was junior wideout Darius "NuNu" Ross, who electri- fied the crowd with two touchdown catches and a pass interception which he returned for a touchdown to lead the Mountaineers to a 30-6 victory. Ross, who is quicker than a hiccup, has had similar games in the past. In one game last year, he touched the football three times and scored ae three touch: {7771 downs. With his ROSS good hands, quick feet and outstanding moves, it's almost impossible for any de- fender to stay with him one-on- one. "He had an outstanding ball- game," said KMHS Coach Denny Hicks. "Our fullbacks did a great job of running the ball inside and our linemen blocked well on the inside and that enabled us to get the ball to the guys on the perime- ter, which is what we do best." The Mountaineers were sluggish in the early moments, allowing the host Mustangs to gallop straight downfield following the opening kickoff for a 6-0 lead. East Lincoln, which fell to 1-2, surprised KM by going to the air right off the bat. The Mustangs drove 70 yards for the go-ahead TD in just six plays. Sophomore quarterback Scott Garrett, making his first start, connected with Doran Johnson for a 41-yard TD pass with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. "We expected them to pass but not in the first part of the game," said Coach Hicks. "They had brought up the sophomore quarter- back just this week and we knew passing was his strong point. But we felt like they'd let him get his feet wet first. They kind of out- foxed us with that strategy." The Mountaineers were able to get their defense settled down and began getting great pursuit from the front four and linebackers. See Ross, 2-B THE YARDSTICK KM EL First Downs 1177 Yds. LR EOCCER COMES TO KMHS Mounties Shut Out Crest 2-0 Kings Mountain High's soccer team won its first-ever home match Wednesday night at John Gamble Stadium, blanking Crest 2-0. It was the first shutout for Coach Dan Potter's team, which had earli- er beaten Crest 5-2 and tied Ashbrook's jayvees 2-2. "Tt was a big win for us," said Potter. "We were a little disap- pointed that we didn't score more than we did but we were under all kinds of pressure. We had a lot of good shots but just didn't get them in." Stephen Fisher scored both KM goals with assists by Keo Chanthphaeng. Kevin Blalock and Lenny Wright split time at the goal for KM and did a good job of keeping the Crest shots out of the net. Kings Mountain was scheduled to host R-S Central's Hilltoppers last night. The Mountaineers go to Shelby next Monday and host South Point next Wednesday at 7 p.m. Mounties At Crest This Week Kings Mountain's Mountaineers will renew their rivalry with the Crest Chargers Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Crest Stadium. The two teams haven't faced each other since the Chargers left the Southwestern 3-A Conference for the 4-A ranks. Kings Mountain dominated the series in its early years but Crest won the last five meetings between the two schools. Overall, KM leads the series 7-6-1. "Crest will be one of the two best teams we've played so far," says KMHS Coach Denny Hicks. "They have good size and speed and show you a lot of different looks on defense. Their defense creates a lot of problems for their opponents." The Chargers are 0-2 but both losses were to powerful 3-A clubs Burns and Shelby. Both of those teams are regarded as contenders in the SWC and Shelby has won the state championship two of the past three seasons. Tailback Ronnie Ross heads the Charger rushing attack but they al- so have a potent passing game. Junior quarterback Kelly Upton gives the Chargers a wide-open of- fensive attack.
