Navy Chaplaincy's Distinguished Preachers Series. His subject was "The Problem of Evil: When Suffering Comes to Good People." According to Capt. Bernie L. Calaway, Command Chaplain for the U.S. Navy, the lecture series was designed to interest members of the community to worship, to expose them to excellent preaching and to enrich their relationship with Christ. In recent years, Patterson has | been actively involved in both Army and Navy Chaplaincy pro- grams as a lecturer across the faa He's a good ole boy with a fruit Jar full of funny stories and a spe- cial talent for telling them. Jerry Clower is never lost for words, which are always positive. Happy as a dead hog in the sunshine, Clower is always "on" lifting the spirits of these around him. Clower comedy is never "blue" or off col- or. Kids old maids and the family along with the preacher, can attend his shows, and never worry about getting embarrassed. Down through the years, a lot of record- ing company's have said clean comedy wouldn't sell very well. Jerry Clower has proven that you don't have to have dirty material to be a star. It takes longer for a clean comedian to make it, but, once they do, there's usually a long stay at the top. Clower has done 18 al- bums and sold a bunch. He's writ- ten three books and had a movie made about his life. Jerry has host- ed the nationally syndicated variety : show "Nashville On The Road." ) He's a regular on "Country A familiar face appears in a bit role in "In The Heat Of The Night" when the new season opens on vl i _» Channel 4 and Channel 36 TV next 7 ¥ month. 1 Elaine Dixon Powell of Conyers, Ga., formerly of Kings Mountain, ! can be seen in a crowd of women i walking in Covington, Ga., the | small town setting of the show. a Mrs. Powell, wife of Jay Powell, was originally offered a bit part by star of the show Carroll O'Conner. In 1973 Clower had one of his most exciting moments, he became a regular member of "The Grand Ole Opry." clower had listened to the Opry and prayed some day he'd get to see it. The first time he saw it, he was booked there. Clower has a down to earth ap- proach to life it's pleasure and problems. He's never got above his raising. He doesn't bother with all those high-falutin' words, accent or diction. He's just himself, that's what we all should be, and strive to be the best we can be. BOB PATTERSON Distinguished Preachers Series. He says: "Gardner-Webb gave me so much, and I have been able to give her so little in return. Staying loyal to his Southern English, Clower keeps alive good - southern traditions, scattering over the best of Dixie along with some good down home comedy. Jerry served his country in World War II. He finished high school at age 17 and joined the Navy the day after. He's been mar- ried to the same woman for 40 years. Been on the same record la- bel, had the same manager and agency since he got into show business. That should tell you something about his loyalty. Something that is dying fast. Unfortunately.
