Co-Chairs Public Health Study Committee Harris On Four Committees Senator Ollie Harris of Kings Mountain has been appointed to four committees in the N. C. General Assembly by Senator Henson P. Barnes, president pro tempore of the N. C. Senate. Harris will co-chair the Public Health Legislative Study Commission, will serve on the Mental Health Legislative Study ° Commission, serve on the Legislative Services Study Commission and serve on the Social Services Legislative Study Commission, A nine-term senator, Harris will serve on the panel to examine the need to improve the statewide pub- lic health delivery system through the local communities. The com- mission will also seek to determine the need for additional legislation to deal with AIDS. One of the mental health panel's tasks will be to review and make recommendations regarding the implementation of the Comprehensive Long Range Plan - WKMT's Jerry Bedsole Gives Program At AARP The Kings Mountain Chapter 4063 AARP Inc., heard a recital of gospel songs by Radio Station WKMT disc jockey, Jerry Bledsoe, Tuesday. Helen Yates, program chairperson for the meeting, had as her guests, Jerry Bledsoe of Radio Station WKMT and his mother. Jerry sang a recital of Gospel Songs while his mother accompa- nied him on the piano. The mem- bership present gave a big ovation and requested that they return again in the near future. Due to lack of volunteerism and help needed to run the chapter, president, Charles Walker, asked if they wanted to turn in their charter and the response was overwhelm- ingly "No." The membership promised to go on a telephone campaign and call old members and ask them to re- new their chapter membership and also promised to help run the chap- ter the way it should be run. Membership also voted to retain the same meeting day, 3rd Tuesday at 3 p.m., and also have a covered dish affair every three months. Supper meetings are planned for November and December meet- ings. Maggie Williams and Rev. and Mrs. R.L. Garvin were welcomed into the chapter under the new rule of last three months of 1988 and all of 1990 for same $2 membership. Membership now stands at 68 members. Members enjoyed a covered dish affair following the meeting and had a period of good fellowship. Members were asked to sign and mail the protest cards to our federal elected officials about high costs of medical care. The cards are preprinted and already addressed and can be had at senior citizens office at the depot. It takes a 15¢ stamp to let your feelings be known, said Walker. Next AARP meeting will be October 17. State Park Hit Hard While most state parks weath- ered the recent hurricane, 16 parks “including Kings Mountain have closed by power outages, downed trees and damaged buildings. Park officials say it's business as usual at 27 state parks that were ei- ther untouched or received minor damage, but the other parks didn't fare as well. Personnel and equip- ment from the unaffected parks have been shifted to the hard-hit parks to open the roads, clear downed trees and make repairs. Park officials began assessing the damage Friday morning and have worked long hours since the storm. "The high winds caused a great deal of damage to trees and build- ings at several parks, and we're working hard to clean up and make these parks operational,” said Charles Harrison, assistant director of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism's State Parks Division.
