Helps Lead KM JVs over Burns
Jayvees
Host Lions
In 'Biggie’
Kings Mountain High's junior
varsity football team won its fourth
straight game Thursday night at
Burns, 26-8, setting up a show-
down for first place in the
Southwestern 3-A Conference
Thursday when the Mountaineers
host Shelby at 7 p.m. at Gamble
Stadium.
Shelby handed previously un-
beaten East Rutherford its first loss
last week, leaving Shelby and KM
as the only teams that haven't lost
inside the conference. KM is 4-2
overall.
The Mountaineers scored all
four of their touchdowns in the
first half last week and then the de-
fense stopped the strong Burns of-
fense on several occasions.
Freshman fullback Jermaine
Grier rambled for 40 yards to set
up his own one-yard scoring
plunge early in the first quarter to
give KM a 6-0 lead.
Later in the first period, Diron
Bell scored on a 15-yard run and
Pat Ross ran for a two-point con-
version to give the Mountaineers a
14-0 lead.
Bell intercepted a pass and re-
turned it 26 yards for a touchdown
and Robbie Ruff scored on a 15-
yard run to give the Mountaineers
a 26-0 halftime lead. Burns scored
its only touchdown in the third pe-
riod on an eight-yard run.
Head Coach John Bumgardner
cited Bobby Glenn, Tony Young,
Antoinne Brown, Bell and Ross for
their defensive efforts and Bell,
Grier, Ruff and Jamie Goforth for
their play on offense.
Mocanu Still Leads In Duckpins
Wally Mocanu continued to set
the pace in Mixed Duckpin
Bowling League action Tuesday
night at Dilling Heating.
Mocanu rolled a 150 line and
424 set to lead his team to a sweep
of Johnny's. Mocanu needed all of
those victories to stay ahead of Lib
Gault, whose team has made great
strides in the past several weeks
and swept John's Tuesday to stay
within a game of first place
Wally's.
Wally got some help from Betty
Hullender Tuesday. She added a
111 line and 301 set. Johnny Dye
led his team with a 116 line and
333 set.

Lib Gault had a 134 line and 381
set and Jack Barrett added a 129-
354 to lead Lib's over John's. John
Dilling led the losers with a 115-
318.
The standings: Wally's 14-10,
Lib's 13-11, Johnny's 13-11, John's

Stadium. KM won in double overtime to stay alive in the race for a state playoff berth.
KMHS Boots Shelby Wednesday
Kings Mountain High's soccer
team split a pair of Western
Piedmont 3- A Conference match-
es during the past week, edging
Shelby 4-2 in double overtime
Wednesday night at Gamble
Stadium and then falling to league-
leading South Point 3-1 Monday at
South Point.
Coach Dan Potter's
Mountaineers, 7-5, were scheduled
to host St. Stephens last night at 7
p.m. at Gamble Stadium. Kings
Mountain and St. Stephens are bat-
tling for the third playoff seed from
the WPC.
Kings Mountain scored goals by
Jack Ladara and John Forrest early
in the second half to grab a 2-0
lead against Shelby last week but
the Lions came back strong at the
end of regulation to force overtime.
In the second 10-minute over-
time, Forrest scored the game-win-
ner and then Keo Chanthaphaeng
added an insurance goal for the
Mountaineers.

time for the Mountaineers, who
had edged R-S Central two nights
before.
"It was a very, very climactic
game," noted Coach Potter.
"Several teachers who had never
seen a soccer game came out and
were very excited about the sport
when I talked with them the next
day. Our players were really excit-
ed, too. We out-played Shelby in
the first half but went into halftime
0-0. We had several good scoring
opportunities that were just a little
bit high or little bit wide.
"But we really did a great job,"
he went on. "We came back out in
the second half and let down a little
bit but still had some great scoring
opportunities. It says a lot about
our team when another team comes
back on us and forces an overtime
and we still have the character to
really stick it to them in overtime.
We played excellent in the over-
time periods. We showed a lot of
heart."

Despite the loss at South Port}
Potter was impressed again witht
his Mountaineers. South Point has
had very few close matches Eh
year. oA
"They weren't really expect
too much from us because of Sor
of the scores we had had and Sor
they had had with the same Opp
nents," Potter said. "They hadjust
beaten R-S Central 10-0 and 'R
had taken us into overtime. They
expected us to be a push-over but
that's not what they found.
"We hit the goal post on several
scoring opportunities but they
missed some good scoring oppor-
tunities, too," he said. "We gave
them a whole lot more than they
were expecting. If you have to
lose, that's a good way to lose. W-
put forth a great effort and it rea)
was a good tune-up for an imp
tant game with St. Stephens."
Ladara scored KM's goal or
outstanding pass from Step
Fisher.
