ad Lions From Page 1-B The momentum still seemed to be in KM's favor as the Mountaineers pulled on onside kick to start the second half and re- covered it at the Shelby 40. They moved to the 12 yard line, where the Shelby defense held again, and Hopper came on to attempt his third field goal. This time Shelby broke through the line quickly and blocked it. The remainder of the third quar- ter was an exchange of punts until the final minute. Shelby took pos- session on its own 12 and was stopped on its first two rushing at- tempts. But on third down, KM was penalized 15 yards for tackling by the face mask and on the very next play, another 15 yards were added for the same infraction and all of a sudden the Lions were at midfield. From that point on, the momen- tum began to change and Shelby, which had been backed up deep in its own territory most of the night, began to get the good field posi- tion. The Lions continuously ran into the middle of the KM line for three and four-yard gainers until they reached the KM 13. The Mountaineers won the pre- Conference Meet last week at North Gaston as six Mountaineers finished in the top 15. Leading the way for Coach Steve Lazenby's runners was senior Chris Henson, who finished third overall in 18:43. John Forrest was sixth at 19:02, Shane Sessoms eighth at 19:15, Ronnie Yarborough ninth at 19:19, Brady Goforth 12th at 19:37 and Matt Stout 15th at 19:47. Barrett Rolls 362 In Duckpin Loop Tommy Barrett rolled a 135 line and 362 set to lead his team to three wins over John Caveny in Mixed Duckpin Bowling League action Thursday night at Dilling Heating. Kenny Bridges also had a big night for the winners with a 118 who went around right end un- touched for the tying touchdown with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Kenny Pauley's point-after from placement split the uprights and Shelby led 7-6. The Mountaineers' offense had long since bogged down and, after the ensuing kickoff, the Mounties ran three plays and punted. Little did they know at that time that they wouldn't touch the ball again until the final minute of the game. Shelby took over on its own 35 and controlled the line of scrim- mage to run almost nine minutes off the clock. The KM defense fi- nally stopped the Shelby drive at the one yard line with 1:02 remain- ing. The Mountaineers were forced to pass to try to get back into the game. McClain hung up a long pass down the right sideline intend- ed for McNeal, but two Shelby de- fenders batted it away. On second down, the Mounties tried to pass in the right flat but Shelby cornerback Ray Shell broke in front of the KM receiver and intercepted the pass and waltzed into the endzone with the clinching score. After ‘the kickoff, Kings Mountain was able to pick up two first downs, including one on a pass interference penalty against the Lions, but it was too little, too late. "You have to give a tremendous amount of credit to Shelby," Hicks said. "But it was real disappointing for us. This is the first time since I've been coaching here that we were actually able to line up with them with equal personnel. Even though we beat them in 1985 and 1986 they had much more team speed that we did. We'd watered at the mouth for the day we could line up with them and this year we could do it. But execution-wise and intensity-wise we didn't get the job done. "Going into the eighth game of the season, you should be very pro- ficient at what you're doing; but at times we just seem to draw a blank. We've just got to keep work- ing on what we've been doing and hope our intensity level picks up a little bit and get back to doing the things we had done so well in the last three weeks."
