Mountains This is a report on the status of fall colors in the mountains of North Carolina. COLOR TRANSITION: Leaves at elevations between 3,000 and 4,000 feet are near 100 percent color transition, while those at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 feet are seeing a 75 per- cent color change. The mountains are bathed in gold- en and warm red hues, with the golden orange sugar maples, yel- low hickories and poplars, red and yellow red maples and burgundy and maroon oak trees providing some of the best color. Yellow goldenrods and pale blue asters are among the wildflowers still bloom- ing. ASHEVILLE AREA AND BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY: "The Asheville area is about a week to ten days late in turning color this year," said Blue Ridge Parkway Spokesman Jim Ryan. "That is due to the heavy rains this summer and in the early fall. The leaves should be good on into the second week of November in the immediate Asheville area." The U.S. Forest Service reminds visitors to take warm clothing on leaf watching trips, because the higher elevations can get quite chilly. Some good leaf trails include: (a) the narrow and winding state Route 80 from Old Fort to Burnsville, (b) U.S. 64 between Brevard, Franklin and Murphy and (c) the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway, a 70-mile circle from U.S. 276 outside Brevard to Route 215 south to Rosman and from U.S. 64 back to Brevard. Traveling along the Parkway north to Craggy Gardens and south to Mount Pisgah and between Asheville and the Linville Falls ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS Pursuant to Section 143-129 of the General Statues of North Carolina, sealed proposals for furnishing the nec- essary labor, tools, materials, and equipment to perform scheduled in- spection and maintenance of the switching station equipment for the City Of Kings Mountain, North Carolina will be be received on or be- fore 2:00 PM, EST, November 9, 1989, at which time and place the pro- posals will be publicly opened and read. Instructions for submitting bids and complete specifications may be ob- tained from the City's Engineer, Southeastern Consulting Engineers, Inc., P.O. Box 240436, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28224. The City of Kings Mountain, North Carolina reserves the right to reject any or all proposals. CITY OF KINGS MOUNTAIN Kings Mountain, North Carolina BY GEORGE A. U.S. 276 north from Maggie Valley and left onto Cove Creek Road into Cataloochee Valley is spectacular.
