FAMOUS AMERICANS - Fifth graders at Grover School are studying famous Americans in S cial Studies. The most fun will be the dunking booth. Several North School celebrities will be at the dunking booth. For 25 cents, you can get three balls and try to dunk Ms. Talbert, our media specialist, or Mr. Hopper, our principal. At 7 p.m., we will have a draw- ing for a Nintendo. Students are selling tickets for one dollar for this wonderful prize. I can't wait for this exciting event at North School. Lyon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Lyon of Route 2, was one of seven young women elected to the Homecoming Court at Western Carolina University during student voting Oct. 11. A senior majoring in early child- hood education, Lyon is a dean's list student, member of the 1988 homecoming court and was elected Miss Catamount 1988. She partici- * pates in intramural softball. A 1984 graduate of Kings Mountain High School, she trans- Decorating Contest Set At Library Kindergarten and First grade stu- dents are participating in a tree decorating contest in conjunction with lighting of the community Christmas Tree at the Library. The Kings Mountain Electric Department will turn on the lights at the 40 foot tall tree at 6 p.m. on Dec. 1. They are inviting Kindergarten and First grade stu- dents in the five elementary schools to draw and color a Christmas tree and will present cer- tificates to first place winners at each of the schools. Art teachers at East, West, North, Bethware and Grover will judge the drawings. The winning drawings will be displayed at City Hall and at Mauney Memorial Library. KM's Arrowood Honored At G-W BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Merinda Arrowood and Robert Lawing have been selected to serve as Presidential Associates at Gardner-Webb College for 1989- 90. Presidential Associates are se- lected on the basis of character, leadership qualities and academic standing. Merinda is the daughter of Lana Arrowood of Kings Mountain. She is a member of the Student Entertainment Association, vice president of the Senior class and a member of the concert choir. She was also a member of the Homecoming court. Robert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald M. Lawing. He and his wife, Karen, live in Shelby. He serves as minister of youth and children at Grassy Pond Baptist Church. United Fund Report Due Third report of the 1990 Kings Mountain United Fund Campaign will be given Monday at noon at a meeting of officers and division chairmen at Holiday Inn. A highlight of WCU's 1989 . homecoming Oct. 28 is the dedica- tion of the newly constructed Alumni Tower, a 66-foot-tall brick structure with clock and carillon that has become the symbol of WCU's centennial year observance throughout 1989-90.
