Southern Bell Donates $22,000 To NC Colleges RALEIGH -- Southern Bell Telephone Company has donated $22,000 to the N.C. Community College System, renewing its com- mitment to the community-based scholarship program started by the company three years ago. The donation will provide forty- four $500 scholarships to commu- nity college students in the Southern Bell service area. The $22,000 check was present- ed to the State Board of Community Colleges by Royce N. Angel, Southern Bell operations manager for customer services, Wilmington. Angel is vice chair- man of the Board. Last year, 21 community col- leges received $1,000 each under the scholarship program. There were several fun activities including a hot dog supper, a dunking booth, a Thursday, November 2, 1989-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3B North Has Fund-Raiser raffle, and a Halloween costume contest. The dunking booth was a very popular event. Joey Hopper, our principal; Kathy James, our PE. teacher; Jane Talbert, our media specialist; and school board mem- bers Mrs. Priscilla Mauney and Billy King each were in the dunk- ing booth at different times. I'm Kings Mountain and Gastonia GA sure they all got wet! The hot dogs must have been de- licious because approximately 675 were sold. The hot dog plates also had baked beans, slaw, and potato chips. The desserts were sold sepa- * rately, and there was a delicious variety to choose from.
