Cornwell, 27, former Kings Mountain resident, died in a fall late Friday during a goat hunting trip near Fort Richardson, Alaska. Cornwell and a friend were on a camping trip in the Alaska moun- tains when the accident occurred. An avid outdoorsman, Cornwell rock and mountain climbed, scuba dived, was an Army ranger who graduated in the top of his class, and a parachutist in Army Pathfinder School. He had been stationed at Fort Richardson on ac- tive duty for two years and was awaiting assignment to Africa on a UN Peacekeeping Mission, his family said. A 1981 graduate of Kings Mountain High school where he was on the tennis team, he was an Eagle Scout and served as a page in the North Carolina Senate for Scnator J. Ollie Harris. He graduat- ed from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and was win- ner of the coveted George C. Marshall award given to a top stu- dent in the Army ROTC program. He recently received his promotion from First Lieutenant to Lieutenant in the United States Army. He married Denise Goins Cornwell of Medford, N. J. in April 1988. He was a member of Kings Mountain's Resurrection Lutheran Church. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Suman of Kings Mountain and grandson of Mrs. Lorene McGinnis of Asheville and the late J. M. McGinnis. Graveside services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery with Rev. Philip Squire officiating. Friends of Lt. McGinnis will lead the military rites at the graveside. | Che family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 9 p. m. at Harris Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials to National Wildlife Federation or Piedmont Council Boy Scouts of America. Surviving, in addition to his wife, parents and grandmother, are his brother, Joe Cornwell of Charlotte, and his sister, Mrs. Diane C. Russell of Kings Mountain. KIRK FAMILY A family homecoming-reunion turned into tragedy Saturday when a family of three were killed in a one-car automobile accident. Stephen Wayne Kirk, 29, his wife, Allison Carter Kirk, 27, and their eight-months-old daughter, Stephania Maria, died when Kirk's car hit a bridge abutment in Edgefield, South Carolina. The Kirks, formerly of Kings Mountain, were meeting other fam- ily members at the reunion and Kirk's brother, Charles Samuel Kirk, of Bessemer City, was fol- lowing behind the victims' car when the accident occurred Saturday. The Kirks resided at 239 School Road in Asheville and Kirk, a Kings Mountain native, was work- ing as a salesman for Dotson Exterminating Co. He was son of Rev. Wayne Kirk and Lucius Spicer Kirk of Kings Mountain and graduated from Bessemer City High School in 1979. Surviving, in addition to his par- ents, are three sisters, Louise Kirk Baker and Irene Kirk Martin, both of Kings Mountain, and Jackie Kirk Heintzelman of Gastonia; his brother, Charles Samuel Kirk of Bessemer City; and his grandmoth- crs, Bessie Kirk of Kings Mountain and Beulah Spicer of Danville, III. Mrs. Kirk was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. She was graduated in 1980 from Asheville's Reynolds High school. She is sur- vived by her father, Vincent Carter of Lake Wales, Fla. and her broth- er, Vincent Carter Jr. of Asheville. Stephanie Kirk is survived by her grandparents, Vincent and Barbara Carter of Lake Wales, Fla. and Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Kirk of Kings Mountain and her great- grandfather Thomas Vincent Carter of Oteen. Joint funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Williams Funeral Service in Asheville by Rev. John Borrough. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery. JIM DOWNEY James Kenneth "Jim" Downey, 57, of 900 Rhodes Avenue, Kings Mountain, died Friday, November 10, 1989 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A Gaston County native, he was the son of the late James and Hattie Hoyle Downey and was employed as sanitation supervisor for the City of Kings Mountain. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and a veteran of the Korean War. He was active in many clubs and organizations in the community and county. He served as a board member with the Cleveland County Arts Council, Cleveland County Cancer Society, N.C. Arts Council, Southern Arts Society and Shelby Art League. He was past president of the Kings Mountain Merchants Association, Lions Club, Little League Baseball, and Church and Industrial Softball Leagues. He was also a Kings Mountain Police Reserve. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Jolley Downey; three sons, Kenney Downey, Jay J. Downey and Joey Downey of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Lynn Jones and Phyllis Downey of Kings Mountain; two brothers, William Downey and Harold Downey of Bessemer City; four sisters, Barbara Black and Joann Smith of Bessemer City, Marlene Childers of Cherryville and Joyce Buckner of Kings Mountain; and two grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church by the Rev. Eugene Land. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. JIMMY FARRIS KINGS CREEK, S.C. - Jimmy Darvin Farris, 26, of Mullinax Circle, died Friday, November 10, 1989 at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney. A Kings Mountain native, he was the son of Jessie Mae Bolin Farris and the late Darby Lee Farris. He was employed by Mike's Masonry Contractors. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Charley Farris of Kings Creek; a brother, Mike Farris of Kings Creek; and two sisters, Kathy Estes and Evelyn Foster of Kings Creek.’ Services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Kings Creek Church of God by the Rev. J.B. Boatwright Jr. and the Rev. B.P. Moss. Burial was in Canaan United Methodist Church cemetery. VIRGINIA HANNON CHESNEE, S.C. - Virginia McCluney Hannon, 70, of 115 Blue Coat Road, died Monday, November 13, 1989 at Cherry Knoll Apartments in Rutherfordton. A Cleveland County native, she was the daughter of the late Talmadge and Lillie Sisk McCluney and wife of the late George Hannon. She was a retried textile employee and member of New Bethel Missionary Methodist Church in Shelby. She is survived by a son, Bob Philbeck of Burbank, Calif.; a daughter, Rose Greene of Forest City; and six grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Crowe's Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Dean, the Rev. Wade Ruff and the Rev. Earl Moseley. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery in Shelby. ANNIE B. BLANTON Annie Lou Bridges Blanton, 62, of 205 Margaret Street, Kings Mountain, died November 11, 1989 at Lincoln County Hospital. A Cleveland County native, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Sallie Farris Bridges. She was a homemaker and member of Temple Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Wesley Blanton; one son, Richard Blanton of Kings/Mountain; one daughter, Debbie Rice of Gastonia; two brothers, Gene Bridges of Jacksonville, Fla., and Roger Bridges of Shelby; and three grandchildren. Graveside services were con- ducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Ron Caulder. OLLIE WHITTEMORE GREENSBORO - Mrs. Ollie Falls Whittemore, 82, of Willowhaven Nursing Home, died Saturday at the home. A former Kings Mountain resi- dent, she was a retired employee of Cass Jewelers and a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral was conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Hanes- Lineberry North Elm Street Funeral Home chapel. Burial was in Rehobeth United Methodist Church cemetery. MRS. McCOMBS GROVER - Evangelist Mino Minnie Lee McCombs, 86, died November 9, 1989 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late VJ. Graham and Laura Sumter and wife of the late Samuel McCombs. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Long Branch Burial Aid Society, the Long Branch Gospel Chorus, the Long Branch Community Sisters Gospel Group and the Mary Bell Missionary Circle. She was also a member of the Mediphysical Church of the Faith. She is survived by her stepmoth- er, Roselle Graham Varner of Grover; one son, Gerald McCombs of Grover; three daughters, Annie Mae Canady of High Point, Hattie Mae McCorkle of Dayton, Ohio, and Janell Crenshaw of Grover; 25 grandchildren; and 29 great-grand- children. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 2 p;.m. at Long Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. R.D. Abbott and the Rev. Larry Dixon. i TIOWAN ENSLEY 1 CLEARWATER, FLA. - Iowan Dixon Ensley, 82, of 221 N. Osceola Avenue, died November 8, 1989 at her home. A native of Kings Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Addie Wiley and Curtis S. Dixon and wife of the late Fred E. Ensley. She was a member of Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clearwater. She is survived by one son, Dr. Eugene O. Ensley of Clearwater; one daughter, Mrs. Margie Holden of Knightdale, N.C.; one brother, H.K. Dixon of Kings Mountain; one sister, Mrs. Elzie Hardin of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchil- dren; and three great-grandchil- dren. Graveside services were con- ducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church ceme- tery by Dr. Randy Gardner. DICK RAMSEY Funeral services for Tyrus Raymond (Dick) Ramsey, 62, of 22 Linestowe Drive, Belmont, who died Nov. 13 at home, will be con- ducted Thursday at Unity Baptist Church in Belmont with Rev. Bob Bodenhamer and Rev. Thomas Brooks officiating, interment fol- lowing in Gaston Memorial Park. Mr. Ramsey was a native of Belmont, the son of the late William Porter and Jeanette Stone Ramsey, a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed as a supervisor with Kings Mountain and Ruppe Hosiery Manufacturing. Surviving are his wife, Betty Isenhour Ramsey; daughters, Mrs. Jill Atkins and Mrs. Dee Dee Atkins; son, Ray Ramsey; sisters, Mrs. Louise R. Armstrong of Belmont and Mrs. Gaynelle R. Ruppe of Kings Mountain; brother, Dan Ramsey of Kings Mountain; and six grandchildren. The family is at the home of Mrs. Jill Atkins, 22 Oak Street, Belmont. NANCY HAMRICK Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Murphy Hamrick, 83, of Crouse, who died Nov. 11 at Concord Nursing Center, were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Webb's Chapel Baptist Church in Crouse, interment fol- lowing in the church cemetery. A native of Gaston County, Mrs. Hamrick was the daughter of the late Samuel Osborne and Sarah Jane Summey and was widow of Ben Bridges Hamrick. A retired registered nurse, she was a graduate of Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and re- tired in 1974 from the staff at Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital. During World War II she worked at Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland and at Camp Gordon General Hospital in Fort Gordon, Ga. She was a member of Derita Baptist Church in Charlotte but since re- tirement had been active in Webb's Chapel Baptist Church in Crouse where she had built her home. Surviving are her son, Weldon Hamrick Sr. of Charlotte; five sis- ters, Carrie Murphy and Mrs. Grace Dellinger, both of Crouse; Mrs. Bess Mauney of Charlotte; Mrs. Ila M. McIntyre of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Helen McGinnis of Columbia, S.C., two grandchildren and two great-grand- children. MRS. ANNA WARE Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Williams Ware, 58, of Route 4, who died Tuesday at Kings Mountain Hospital after several year's illness, will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel by Rev. Willie Arrowood and Rev. Flay Payne. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Mrs. Lona Mae Champion Williams of Kings Mountain and the late Julius Williams. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Midview Baptist Church.
