Oriental Avenue, prominent Kings Mountain businessman, were con- ducted Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Boyce Memorial ARP Church of which he was a member. Rev. Harold Mace, interim pas- tor, was assisted by former pastor Dr. William Tyson and Dr. Harris Blair, in officiating the rites, and interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Partner in the family-owned and operated Allen's Flower Shop, Crawford died Dec. 11 at Kings Mountain Hospital after several month's illness. A native of Gaston County, he was son of the late Roy Elford and Julia Estelle Foy Crawford. He was married to Selma Allen Crawford in 1950. Active in Boyce Memorial ARP Church, he was an Elder, trustee, on the board of Christian Education, and served on the pulpit committee in 1969 when the church called Dr. Charles Edwards as pastor. He was a mem- ber of the Garrison Bible Class and a former Sunday School Superintendent. He served on the city zoning committee for a num- ber of years on appointment by Kings Mountain City Council. He was an Army veteran of World War IL Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, James Calvin Crawford Jr. of Kings Mountain and Steven Crawford of Salisbury; daughters, Rita. Cobb.and Cindy Phillips, beth of Kings Mountain; ; brothers, “Saitiuel E. Crawford of Gastonia; sister, Lorina. Forbes of Kings Mountain; and seven grand- children. Memorials may be made to Boyce Memorial ARP Church, Edgemont Drive, Kings Mountain, 28086. ERNEST BEAM SHELBY - Emest Evans Beam, 77, of 1853 East Marion Street, died Sunday, December 10, 1989 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A Cleveland County native, he was the son of the late David C. and Lizzie Nora Camp Beam. He was a retired law enforcement offi- cer with the Kings Mountain Police Department and Cleveland County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Esther Allen Beam; one son, Wayne Beam of Shelby; five daughters, Diana Wright of Fallston, Iris Rose of Boiling Springs, Eloise Beam of Asheville and Mary Leigh and Gail Humphries, both of Shelby; two sisters, Moseline Blanton of Shelby and Velma Moore of Kings Mountain; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren., The funeral was conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeff Brendle and the Rev. Roland Leath. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the music ministry of Elizabeth Baptist Church. MARY SUE HUDSON GROVER - Mary Sue Benton Hudson, 97, of Route 1, Lavender Road, died Saturday, December 9, 1989 at Kings Mountain Convalescent Center. A Gaffney, S.C., native, she was the daughter of the late Andy and Martha Ann Batchler Benton and was married to the late Nathan Hudson. She was a homemaker and member of Clearview Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, William Hudson of Grover; a daughter, Martha Morton of Grover; 11 grandchildren; 29 great- grandchildren; and 17 great-great- grandchildren. ; The funeral was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Clearview Baptist Church by the Rev. Rudolph Lemmons and the Rev. James Sanders. Burial was in Grover Cemetery. LEOLA J. OATES Leola Julia Oates, 90, of Route 4, Kings Mountain, died December 6, 1989 at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Lem and Nancy Castle and wife of the late J. Rome Oates. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church where she served in the missionary department, Sunday School and was a member of the Friendly Aide Society. She is survived by four sons, Fred Oates of Brooklyn, N.Y., Limeul Oates of Charlotte, James Oates of Jamaica, N.Y., and Frank Oates of the home; three daughters, Catherine Buie of Greensboro, Ozena Wilson of Bridgeport, Conn., and Margaret Stephens of the home; a step-daughter, Ruby C. Boyd of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 19 grand- children; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. W.A. Maddox Sr. Burial was in Mount Olive Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Mount Olive Baptist Church build- ing fund. LILLIAN D. LEACH GROVER - Lillian Sara Jane Davidson Leach, 69, of Route 2, died December 4, 1989 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A York County, S.C., native, she was the daughter of the late John «and Martha Crouser Davidson. She was a‘member of Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Church where she was a member of the missionary circle, usher board, ‘steward board, senior choir and cornmunity sisters choir. She is survived by her husband, James L. Leach of Winston-Salem; four sons, James Leach Jr. of Kings Mountain, Bobby Leach and Wayne Leach of Shelby and Donald Leach of Winston-Salem; two adopted sons, John J. Leach of Alexandria, Va., and Terry Crocker of the home; five daughters, Betty Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y., Goldie G. Leach of Kings Mountain, Nancy Davis of New Rochelle, N.Y., Brenda Williams of _ Baltimore, Md., and Teena Adams of Shelby; two brothers, Clarence Davidson of Raleigh and James Davidson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sis- ter, Mattie Mae Howard of Winston-Salem; 40 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Friday at Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. E.M. Browning. Burial was in the church cemetery. WILLIAM T. LEDBETTER William Thomas Ledbetter, 74, of 218 Lackey Street, Kings Mountain, died December 9, 1989 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Tom and Macie Ramsey Ledbetter. He was married to the late Myrtle Goforth Ledbetter, who died in 1981. He was a retired textile worker and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by one son, Bill Ledbetter of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Betty Myers of Kings Mountain and Pat Kiser of Gastonia; seven brothers, John Ledbetter of Kings Mountain, David Ledbetter of Grover, Daniel Ledbetter of Statesville, James Ledbetter of Lancaster, S.C., and Tommy Ledbetter, Harvey Ledbetter and Marvin Ledbetter, all of Rock Hill, S.C.; six sisters, Bertha Henson of Kings Mountain, Shirley White of Shelby, Louise Moss, Wilma Parker and Carolyn Henson, all of Rock Hill, S.C., and Geraldine Robinson of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services were conducted Monday at 4 p.m. at Harris Chapel by the Rev. Leonard Huffstetler. Burial was in Mountain Rest ‘Cemetery. Extended Phone Service Coming To Local Towns Most telephone customers in the Gaston County area will soon have a larger local calling area. Beginning Dec. 15, Southern Bell will provide two-way Extended Area Service between South Crowder's Creek and Gastonia, bel- mont, Bessemer City, Kings Mountain, Lowell, Mount Holly and Stanley. The new calling plan will mean that beginning Friday all calls be- tween South Crowder's Creek and the other exchanges will be toll- free, Currently, two-way EAS is operating among all the exchanges except to. "We determined, and the Commission agreed, that the best way to address all our customers’ needs would be to implement a two-way EAS," she said.
