Phone Customers Can Make Choice Shelby, Gastonia and Lowell telephone users will soon be get- ting the chance to tell Southern Bell how large they want their lo- cal calling area to be. Southern Bell is mailing ballots to its customers as the next step in implementing its new Community Circle Plan in two months. "Community Circle is an alter- native to traditional flat-rate Extended Area Service," said Pam Massey, the company's manager of corporate and community affairs. "This is the first time the plan has been used in North Carolina and we believe that it will be very pop- ular. Not only does it meet the needs of customers who need to expand their local calling zones, but it also can help many of our customers save money on their phone bills.” - The plan, similar to one in use in West Virginia, is based on a 22- mile radius around the primary ex- change. It gives customers as many - as four options based upon the amount they use their phones and the locations they all. The North Carolina Utilities Commission or- dered Southern Bell to conduct an 18-month trial of the plan to see how well it fits the needs of people in the state. Southern Bell chose the Gastonia, Lowell and Shelby cxchanges as locations for the trial plan and is currently mailing out information packages and ballots 10 all customers in these loca- tions." After they study the infor- mation, we are asking that they choose the option which best meets their needs and return the ballots to us. The plan will go into effect March 2, so we would like to have the ballots returned by the middle of February," said Massey. .The plan offers four options: Thrifty Caller, Community Caller, Community Caller Plus and Frequent Caller and offers savings opportunities which, in some cases, may reduce the monthly local ser- vice charge by 50 percent. Unlimited calling within the Shelby exchange would include calls to numbers beginning with 480,481,484 and 487. Food Lion Urges Students To Go To College Food Lion Incorporated has joined with colleges in the Carolinas to encourage more high school students to take positive, : long-range steps to get into col- lege. The grocery corporation 3 the Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers have produced a brochure entitled " Your Keys To The Future: A Guide To College Planning." | The brochure will be used in conjunction with a college plan- ning workshop which is being pre- sented by college and university admission officers primarily to high school sophomores through- out North and South Carolina. The workshop is offered at no charge. It is designed to encourage students to begin thinking early about fur- thering their education after high school and through early planning they will have more options avail- able. It is estimated that over 60,000 students in the Carolinas will be involved in this program. The brochure includes steps 1o- ward making the best college choices, information on how to de- cide on the right college, and tips on where to look for information on schools and colleges-- such as reference books, college day pro- grams, and visits to the colleges themselves. The brochure also tells, general- ly, how to apply to colleges and how to find out about financial aid. A timetable for planning is also part of the brochure, and covers the sophomore through the senior year of high school. "We find that students wait much too long to start the college planning process." said Steve Poston, Director of admissions at Wingate College and President of Admissions Officers.
