CHARLES SMART
Funeral services for Charles
Smart, 52, of Route 6, Wade Ford
Inc. mechanic for 20 years, will be
held Friday at 2 p.m, at Shelby's
Community Baptist Church.
The body will lie -in- state at the
church 30 minutes before the hour
of service. Rev. Glenn Ballard,
Rev. Jerry Lumpston and Rev. Ray
Lamb will officiate and interment
will be in the church cemetery.
A native of Cleveland County,
Smart died Wednesday, Feb. 14, at
Cleveland Memorial Hospital.
He was son of Curtis and Suzie
Ivey Smart and husband of
Margaret Jones Smart. He was a
member of Community Baptist
Church where he was a Sunday
School teacher, deacon and assis-
tant Sunday School superintendent.
Also surviving are two sons,
Ricky Smart and Randy Smart of
Kings Mountain; brothers, Forest
Smart of Casar, Rufus Smart of
Shelby and Virgil Smart of
Polkville; sisters, Mrs. Gail Cooke
of Shelby and Mrs. Frances
Hutchins of Connelly Springs.
The family will receive friends
Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at
Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

Memorial services. for Mrs.
Annie Mae Wells Lockridge, 81, of
411 Maner Road, who died Feb. 14
at Kings Mountain Hospital, will
be conducted Thursday at 3:30
p.m. at Boyce Memorial ARP
Church of which she was a mem-
ber.
Rev. Harold Mace will officiate
and interment will be in Mountain
Rest Cemetery.
A native of Cleveland County,
she was the daughter of the late
Vane and Mamie Compton Wells.
She was widow of Maxwell Paul
Lockridge.
Surviving are her daughter,

brothers, John Wells of Rustburg,
Va. and Ralph Wells, Claude Wells
and Pete Wells, all of Kings
Mountain; sisters, Lillie Gladden

Keeter Jr. of Lawndale; daughters,
Mrs. Betty Kirkpatrick of Shelby,
Mrs. Peggy Kish of Richmond,
Va., Mrs. Jo Ann Hicks of
Charlotte and Mrs. Sue Hyler of
Lancaster, S.C.; brothers, Hoyt
Keeter Sr. of Shelby and Tyree
Keeter of Grover; sister, Neely
Shirkey of Mooresville; nine
grandchildren and six great-grand-

DOROTHY BUTLER
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Dorothy
McMullen Butler, 64, of 2900 14th
St. N.W., died February 6, 1990 at
Washington Hospital Center.
A Cleveland County native, she
was the daughter of the late John
and Macy Mullen, She was a mem-
ber of Vestibule A.M.E. Zion
Church in Kings Mountain.
She is survived by two brothers,
Frank McMullen of Youngtown,
Ohio, and Roger McMullen of
Washington; three sisters, Lula M.
Gallaway, Lessie Allison and
Albertha Williams, all of Kings
Mountain,
The funeral was conducted
Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Vestibule
AME. Zion Church by the Rev.
Cornelius Bell and the Rev. Roger
McMullen. Burial was in the
church cemetery.

A Rutherford County native, she
was the daughter of the late George
and Jenny Martin Alley. She was a
retired textile employee and mem-
ber of Mountain Creek Baptist
Church.
She is survived by her husband,
John Koone; a son, Eddie Koone of
Forest City; three daughters, Judy
Green of Kings Mountain, Joann
Jenkins of Cliffside and Martha
Walters of Rutherfordton, two
brothers, Bruce Alley of Forest
City and Eugene Alley of
Columbus; a half brother, Oscar
Alley of Forest City; eight grand-
children; and two great-grandchil-
dren.
The funeral was conducted
Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Mountain
Creek Baptist Church by the Rev.
Darrell Poole, the Rev. Wayne
White and the Rev. Billy
Honeycutt. Burial was in Round
Hill Baptist Church cemetery in

HOLLIE SCOGGINS
HENRIETTA - Hollie Forest
Scoggins, 69, died February 10,
1990, at Rutherford Hospital.
He was the son of the late
Samuel Jefferson and Mary
Elizabeth Strickland Scoggins and
husband of the late Junita Newton
Scoggins. He was a retired textile
employee and a U.S. Army veteran
of World War II.
Survivors include a son, Forest
Scoggins of Henrietta; three
daughters, Frankie Godfrey of
Ellenboro, Brenda Thompson of
Caroleen and Linda Oliver of
Henrietta; six sisters, Dorcus Mills
and Pauline King of Chesnee, S.C.,
Lucille Hutchins and Wanda
Roberson of Forest City, Louise
Melton of Hendersonville and
Vivian Payne of Grover; four
brothers, Marvin Scoggins of
Abingdon, Md., Bobby Scoggins
of Kings Mountain, Harold
Scoggins of Grover and Grover
Scoggins of Ellenboro; nine grand-
children; and 13 great-grandchil-
dren.
The funeral was conducted at 2
p.m. Monday at Harrelson Funeral
Home by the Rev. Jack
Pennington. Burial was in

Cherryville's City Memorial
Cemetery.
GREGORY FORD
Gregory Keith Ford, 3-month-
old son of Richard and Beverly
Richards Ford of 6130 Quincy
Street, Kings Mountain, died
February 11, 1990 at his home.
In addition to his parents, he is
survived by his paternal grandpar-
ents, Ernest and Pearl Thornburg
Ford of Kings Mountain, and his
maternal grandparents, J.G. and
Hettie Patterson Richards of Kings
Mountain.
Graveside services were con-
ducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. at
Mountain Rest Cemetery by the
Rev. James Hamrick and the Rev.
Sam Robbins.

Ward Running For Senate
Gaston County Commissioner
David Ward has announced his
candidacy for a seat in the N. C.
Senate from the 25th Senatorial
District which includes Gaston,
Cleveland, Lincoln and Rutherford
Counties.
Ward, a Republican, is president
of Ward Funeral Home of
Gastonia. He is a former chairman
of the Gaston County GOP and has
served on the Gaston County
Board of Commissioners since
1984, as vice chairman and as
chairman of the board in 1989.
Ward serves as vice-chairman of
Centralina Council of
Governments representing a nine-
county region and is chairman and
charter member of Lake Wylie
Marine Commission. He is a past
president of Union Road Optimist
Club.

A native of Gaston County,
Ward, 44, is married and father of a
daughter, Jennifer. He is a graduate
of Kentucky College of Mortuary
Science and attended Gaston
College.
During his service as chairman
on the Gaston County commission
he started an adopt-a-highway pro-
gram in Gaston County which be-
came the second largest in the state
with over 450 miles of roads
adopted and Gaston County signed
contracts with area municipalities
to build a waste to energy incinera-
tor.
The GOP Primary is in May and
the three winners in November
face the three winners of the May
Democratic Primary where four
people, including incumbents
Senators Ollie Harris, Marshall
Rauch and Helen Marvin are chal-
lenged by Bruce Scism. Harris and
Scism are both from Kings
Mountain.

High Winds
Miss Area
Kings Mountain missed the high
winds which damaged two areas of
the county Saturday. a
High winds moved a mobile
home off its foundation in the Oak
Grove Community at 8:30 a.m. and
deposited Penny and Jerry Foster's
residence against 30 foot trees. The
Fosters were inside the residence at
the time but were not injured.
At 8:45 a.m. a tornado touched
down on Emerald Mine Road sev- g \!
cral miles south of Shelby and left ==
at least a dozen homes damaged,
three severely, one mobile home
destroyed and two mobiles homes
damaged. A funnel cloud was i
sighed at 9:02 am. 10 miles west
of Gastonia. Tornado warnings
were out in Gaston, Cleveland and
Lincoln Counties until noon
Saturday.
No one was injured in the storm
which was part of a larger front
that passed through the Carolinas
late Friday and early Saturday.
