The recipients of N. C. Teaching Fellows are Rivers Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Smith who will study music education at Appalachian State University; Katherine Jenkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Jenkins who will study math education at Meredith College, and Angie Subler, daugh- ter of Mr. ‘and Mrs. William Subler who will study elementary educa- tion at Appalachian State University. All three students are honor stu- dents and active in student and community organizations. In 1986 the N. C. General Assembly established the N.C. Teaching Fellows program to meet the increasing demand for top qual- ity teachers in the public schools. It ~ 3 KMHS Seniors Get Scholarships is the most ambitious teaching re- cruitment program in the nation and offers 400 seniors a total of $5,000 per year for four years of college if they agree to teach in the N.C. public schools after graduat- ing from college and meet certain stringent criteria. The program is governed by the N. C. Teaching Fellows Commission a group of 11 individuals who were appointed by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House of Representatives. Applicants are screened and interviewed at the lo- cal and regional levels. The exami- nation includes high school grades, writing samples, class standing, SAT scores, and extra curricular activities. “The Teaching Fellows program attracts North Carolina brightest and best students into teaching,” said KMSHS guidance counselor Anita Campbell. { " ? a. The young people are among 400 in North Carolina who will study for the next four years as a Teaching Fellow funded by grants from the N. C. legislature. The scholarship announcement was made Saturday. 7 Reynolds To Speak At Legion Det. Lt. Richard Reynolds of the Kings Mountain Police Department will present the program on "Drugs" at the April 19 meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary at the American Legion Building. Program chairman Arlene Barrett will introduce the program which is on the Children and Youth theme. Hostesses for the 7 p.m. meeting are Margaret Dover, Virginia Sabetti, Athalee Scates and Euzelia Volbracht. Club President Hilda Goforth will preside. Business of the meet- ing will include the appointment of a nominating committee for new officers and to make plans for the May 5 District 23 meeting to be hosted by the local unit in Kings Mountain.
