Saturday's Budweiser 250, won by L.D. Ottinger, followed by Dale Jarrcit and Kyle Petty, won't be re- membered for the race but for "The Wreck." 3 Michael Waltrip assured himself a spot on racing film clips for years to come. "The Wreck" will be there along with Petty's wrecks at Darlington and Daytona, as well as the crashes of Bobby Allison, Phil Parsons and Fireball Roberts. The fans got their money's worth. Most racing fans will deny it, but just good racing "round and round” is dull. They come to see the brightly painted cars bang into cach other or go spinning out of control into the wall. "The Wreck" occurred when Waltrip was forced high on lap 171. The 36 degree banking allows for faster racing in the turns. As Waltrip exited turn two he crashed directly into the juncture of the in- ficld gate and the concrete wall, which is similar to a bridge abut- ment. The car burst into hundreds of pieces, leaving only the roll cage intact. Survival appeared impossible and brought a wave of shock, fear, tcars and screams from the fans. Waltrip stood up from the wreck- age and was helped to a rescue cot to the disbelief of everyone. Veteran drivers and crewmen de- scribed it as "unbelievable." They also said it was the worse wreck they had ever seen in stock car his- tory. Waltrip drove again the next day in his Winston Cup car. Because of the new asphalt seal- cr on the track, cars spun out or in- to the wall both Saturday and Sunday. In Sunday's Valleydale 500 ev- eryone was hitting one another. As the race wound down Davey Allison became the leader. He out- dueled Mark Martin, Darrell Waltrip, Ricky Rudd and Sterling Marlin for 109 laps, finishing just inches ahead of Martin, then Rudd, Terry Labonte and Rick Wilson. There was only one groove on the track and Allison drove it flaw- lessly, as if his car was on rails. This was the second good race for Allison. At Darlington last week, he finished a strong third af- ter being down a lap from hitting the wall. The real Robert Yates showed through as he led his team to con- tention at Darlington and a victory at Bristol. Look out for them at Talladega. Allison-won thee in 1987 and 1989 in the Winston 500. Talladega is Davey's home track and Robert will have their Ford ready. One ob- stacle might be the restrictor plates. CAROLINA SPEEDWAY - Carolina finally got its regular weekly racing events in Saturday without rain. Regular weekly rac- ing for all divisions will continue this Saturday at 8 p.m. Last week's results: Late model - Lynn Mercer, Doug Sanders, Billy Knight, Tim Newman, Danny Toney. Semi modified - Gene Sanders, Gene Miles, Roger Stone, Randy Terry, Tim Sigmon. : Super stock - Tom McCotter, Billy Thompson, Mike Bledsoe, James Galloway, Danny Stutts.
