KM Boys Club Cagers Win State Tournament The Kings Mountain Boys Club 13-year-old AAU all-stars won the state championship last weekend in Concord and will play in the na- tional tournament in July in Indiana. This marks the third straight year a KMBC team has qualified for the national tournament. KM teams finished second and third in the nation the last two years. Kings Mountain defeated Gastonia 88-40, Raleigh 95-43 and the Charlotte Royals 88-79 to win the state. Raleigh defeated the Charlotte Royals in overtime for second place and will also advance to the national tournament. Jovan Bell and Robert Williams scored 12 points each and Troy cr SEE pt Phillips, Sharee Hopper, Ian- Adams and Jason Rayford added 10 each in the victory over Gastonia. Adams scored 16 points, Bell 12, Williams 11, ‘and Rayford, Hopper and Tank Roseboro 10 each in the semi-finals win over Raleigh. Phillips, Adams and Bell scored 11 each and Rayford, Williams, Roseboro and Hopper added 10 points in the champi- onship win over Charlotte. KM advanced to the state tour- nament by winning four straight games in the West Regionals at Wilkesboro. KM defeated Foothills 90-40, Alexander County 95-38, Charlotte Sonics 105-32 and Avery County 116-13. Bell scored 12, Williams and Roseboro 11 each, and Phillips, Tourney Here This Weekend Kings Mountain Boys Club will host the West Regional 15-17 AAU Basketball Tournament April 12-15 at Kings Mountain High School, Kings Mountain Junior High and the Kings Mountain Community Center. The top 15, 16 and 17 year old basketball players in this end of the state will be competing for the right to play in next week's state championship tournament. Action gets underway Thursday at 5 p.m. Hopper and Shanas Gordon 10 each in the win over Foothills. Adams scored 13, Rayford 12, Hopper and Bell 11 each, and Williams, Roseboro and Phillips 10 each in the win over Alexander County. Rayford, Adams and Bell had 11 cach and Hopper, Williams, Roseboro, Phillips and David Taylor 10 each in the win over Charlotte. Taylor scored 15 points, Gordon and Phillips 13 each, Rayford 11, and Hopper, Bell, Williams and Adams 10 each in the win over Avery County. Kings Mountain's 11-year-old team also won the state game and will play in the national tourna- ment in Orlando, Fla. in July. Girls Track Team Second In Kings Mountain High's girls track team finished second in a three-team Southwestern 3-A Conference meet Wednesday. Shelby won the event with 106 pints, followed by KM with 44 and South Point with 11. Kings Mountain picked up two first place finishes. Neck Moore won the 100 meter hurdles in 18.95 seconds, and Angie Blanton won the 300 meter high hurdles in 58.86 seconds. Finishing second were Blanton in the high jump (4'4"); Pam Martin, Kimberly Hoyle, Emily Campbell and Doung Mounghane in the 3200 meter relay (13:54.00); SW Meet Tonya Walls in the 100 meter hur- dles (19.25); Doung Mounghane in the 3200 meter run (17:28); and Tikki Thomas in the 200 meter run (28.86). Finishing third were Kelly Hardy in the long jump (13'4"); and Christy McClary in the 200 meter run (29.22). Shelby will battle Hunter Huss at 8 p.m. Games will be played Wednesday at 5:30 and 8 p.m., Thursday at 5:30 and 8 p.m., and Friday at 5:30 and 8 p.m. "This will be a good way for the people in the area to see some great ball games,” said Coach Clark. "This is really a big tournament, probably the biggest high school baseball tournament in this area. It's a lot of fun for the kids and they get to be exposed to a lot of different media. I think Kings Mountain will show itself well." Each school is guaranteed $250 by the sponsoring Gaston Observer, and as host Kings Mountain will get to keep all the concession monies. "This should be an exciting tour- nament because there are several top-notch teams involved,” Clark said. "We're really excited about playing in it and also maybe mak- ing some money for our program."
