CONCORD - A sudden cold snap and predictions of 30-degree temperatures by nightfall here Saturday prompted Concord Motor Speedway owner/operator Henry Lee Furr to postpone the opening night of the speedway's regular weekly racing season. When racing resumes this week, drivers in four divisions will do battle for weekly points that deter- mine the season's racing champi- ons. The weekly shows, which nor- mally start at 7:30 p.m., with heat races, will include 25-lap super stock, 50-lap late model stock and late model sportsman features, and a 20-lap enduro wrapup event. Drivers also will be competing for prize money, paid by NASCAR down through all divisions. The top division, for late model sports- man entries, competes in NASCAR's Winston Racing Series for weekly drivers, which covers about 90 tracks this year nation- wide. GAFFNEY, S.C. - Hot Rod Lamance captured the Domino's late model feature Saturday night at Cherokee Speedway to become the fifth different late model win- ner of the season. Lamance started the 30-lap trek from the pole after winning the first heat race. Mike Duvall claimed the outside front row start- ing position and jumped out to a comfortable lead at the drop of the green. Duvall held command for the first 10 laps only to have an en- gine expire, thus giving the lead for the remaining laps to Lamance. Lamance collected $1,500. Billy Scott finished second, Ray Tucker third, Buck Simmons fourth and Ricky Weeks fifth. Roger Hamrick claimed the Pepsi limited modified main event. Jerry Lark, Tim Goode, Johnny Arrants and Steve Potcat followed. Ronnie Sewell inherited a win in the WSSL thunder and lightning action. Mitch Duvall took the checkered flag but was disqualified after refusing to submit to a post- race engine inspection.
