Orr From Page 1-A scattered areas of town. "Recently the Housing Authority reroofed the 250 apartments at 17 sites and put up guttering and we feel that in future years we can put up more units in town," he says. Public housing apartments are located at Orr Terrace, McGill Court, Harmon Court, Tate Terrace, Thornburg Drive, Parris Drive, Tracy Street, Wilson Terrace, Ark Street, Baker Street, North Cansler Street, Railroad Avenue, East Ridge Street, West Ridge Street , Grace Street, North City Street and Carpenter Street. Many of the sites are named for former owners of property or for current and former members of the Kings Mountain Housing Authority, a board of seven Kings Mountain citizens supervising the project and including, in addition to Orr, McGill, Don Parker, Carl Wilson, Rev. M. L. Campbell, Wanda Conner and Marie Burris. Julia Jordan is executive director. His activity in the community is not limited to the Housing Authority. Orr joined the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at age 12 and has been active ever since. A member of Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church, he is the district lay council president and last year at the national convention in Los Angeles, California he was elected the second vice president of Connectional Lay Council which has membership of 20,000 in a denomination which numbers millions. In 1962 he was tapped Omega Man of the Year, an award voted by a fraternity, and in 1985 was voted one of the highest awards, the Victor J. Tulane Award, giv- en to a layman in the AME Zion Church. That presen- ‘tation was made in Norfolk, Va. Orr served as trustee of Kings Mountain Hospital from 1977-87. Born and reared in Kings Mountain, he is the son of the late Mary Jane Odums and Lawrence Orr. A gradu- ate of Davidson High School, he served four years in the U. S. Navy during World War II with duty in the South Pacific. Discharged in 1945, he joined Ware &. Sons, the old roller mill which used to be located on West Gold Street across from Plonk Brothers, and then went to Kerns Brothers as a truck driver. He married Mae Sue Boyce in 1946. Orr recalled that he and his wife enjoyed one of their best vacations while he was employed by Duplex Shannon at the Buccaneer Mills in the Virgin Islands for about seven months. A fixer at Duplex, he was transferred to the Virgin Islands, a place he hopes to revisit someday. When he left Duplex after 15 years, he joined Anvil Knit as a second shift knitting supervi- sor and has worked there 10 years. For several years Orr and James Adams were partners in Adams-Orr Cab Company. The Orrs are parents of a son, Larry Lewis Orr, who lives in Charlotte with his wife, Elizabeth Jane Pressley Orr and their daughter, Keisha Yolanda, 17. Larry Orr is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves and is employed by IBM Corporation. Growing tomatoes in his back yard garden at 507 N. Watterson Street has supplied his family, friends and neighbors with home-grown vegetables over the years. The secret of his success with tomatoes is to raise the plants "up a little off the ground in a bed and cover with black plastic." Fishing has always one of Orr's hobbies for relax- ation. A perfect spot is Moss Lake where Orr likes to take his boat and fish for crappies. Although he doesn't plan to retire soon, Orr would find politics and fishing perfect relaxation in retirement years.
