"BUTCH" CAMPBELL Edward Gordon "Butch" Campbell Jr., 35, of Police Club Road, Kings Mountain, died Aprit 18, 1990 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of Edward G. Campbell Sr. of Kings Mountain and the late Betty Wilson Campbell. He was employed as a computer control technician at Eaton Corporation. He was a mem- ber of the American Quarter Horse Association and Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. In addition to his father, he is survived by one brother, Scott Campbell of Kings Mountain; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. H.C. Wilson of Kings Mountain; and his paternal grandfather, Charles B. Campbell of Kings Mountain. The funeral was conducted Friday at 4 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church by the Revs. Gene Alexander, Bob Little and Mitchell Pruitt. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. NELLIE THORNBURG Nellie Ware Thornburg, 80, of 103 North City Street, Kings Mountain, died April 23, 1990, at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Martha Elizabeth Carroll Ware and wife of the late Gresham Taft Thornburg. She was a homemaker and member of El Bethel United Methodist Church. She is survived by four brothers, Howard Ware, C.D. Ware, James Ware and Robert Ware, all of Kings Mountain; and two sisters, Mary Spearman and Lucille Randall of Kings Mountain. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m.at Harris Chapel by the Revs. Lynn Sorrells and J.J. Thornburg. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. BARBARA HAAS CHERRYVILLE - Barbara Goins Haas, 70, of 201 South Dixie Street, died April 22, 1990, at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late William and Mattie Haynie Moss. She was a retired textile worker and member of Buffalo Baptist Church, Shelby. She is survived by her husband, Boyd Haas; two sons, Carroll. Goins of Shelby and William "Bill" Goins of Cherryville; a daughter, Irene Grigg of Kings Mountain; a brother, Darwin Moss of Lawndale; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Buffalo - Baptist Church in Shelby by the Revs. Sam Snyder and Max Turner. Burial was in the church cemetery. Symphony Tickets For Senior Citizens As a special activity to kick off May as Older Americans Month, the Kings Mountain Senior Center and City of Kings Mountain will make available 50 free Charlotte Symphony tickets to senior adults in the Kings Mountain area. These tickets are good for admission to the May 3 8 p.m. performance at B.N. Barnes Auditorium, The tickets will be given away on a first come, first serve basis. Board To Meet The Solid Waste Advisory Board will meet Wednesday, May 2, at 12:30 in Room 104-D of the Law Enforcement Center/Courthouse in Shelby. The public is invited on May 17 from 6-9 to tour and use the walking track and other school facilities and to participate in health displays to be set up in the vacant area behind Neisler Natatorium. Wellness Kickoff Planned For May 17 What is billed as a "Wellness Kickoff" on May 17 from 6-9 p.m. at KMSHS track area will show the public what the local schools and city recreation department have to offer the public free for good phys- ical fitness. KMHS Principal Jackie Lavender, Parks & Recreation Director David Hancock, Schools Health Coordinator Cindy Borders and Director of Public Instruction Jane King accompanied representa- tives of local industry on a tour of the walking track, the new indoor Neisler Natatorium, the tennis courts, and an area behind the Natatorium where booths will be set up on May 17 for various in- dustry to promote good health and where organizations like the American Red Cross and the Cleveland County Health Department will set up exhibits and blood pressure checks will be made. "We want everyone to get on the bandwagon during National Health Fitness Week to encourage walking and to let everyone know that they can come to the lighted track and walk for good health, play horse- shoes, use the tennis courts, and use the basketball goals ," said Rev. Bob Collins, who heads up the School Health Advisory Council. Allan Propst is Wellness chairman. Participating in Monday morn- ing's tour were Donna Haretos of Phillips DuPont, Pat Haskins of Spectrum, Lavon Strickland of Parkdale, Marlene Reynolds of Glen Raven, Sandy Etters of Harper's Pharmacy, Allison Woods of ABB Combustion, Rita Lawing of Clevemont Mills, and Jane Starnes of Tultex. They were en- couraged to sell the program to lo- cal industries and to help get the public out for the grand opening of the wellness program and see and use the new work out trails and fit- ness stations being put up. The city recently installed secu- rity lights at the walking track so that the track can be used evenings Four horseshoe pits are located be- hind the lighted tennis courts. Sit-up and stretch bars are locat- ed at the back of the tennis courts between KMJH and KMSHS and the carpentry class is helping out in installing the volleyball court. A pay telephone will also be installed in the area of the Natatorium for the benefit of the public in emer- gencies. Hancock said there is a commu- nity-wide interest in an exercise program and that additional fitness stations are planned and corporate sponsorship will be invited.
