West Wins Dental Contest West School in Kings Mountain has been declared both a county and state winner in the annual "Super Smiles" dental health con- test. Dr. Joseph Hendrick Jr. of Shelby, Secretary/Treasurer of the Isothermal Dental Society, made the presentation of a certificate, plaque and $50 check to West Elementary on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Shirley Bynum, Principal of West, accepted the awards on be- half of the students and staff. West School won these awards by earning over 2000 points in the annual Super Smiles contest spoh- sored jointly by the N. C. Department of Public Instruction and the N. C. Dental Society. Any North Carolina school was eligible to participate in the contest which takes place in February. The cate- gories of the contest were: School Dental Health Activities and Dental Health Community/Awareness Activities. West School has participated in the Super Smiles contest for the past three years and has been a county and state winner each year. "West School maintains a quality preventive dental health program during the school year through the SWISH program and study of dental health in the class- room," she said. West School will use the award money to purchase dental film- strips and materials to enhance the dental awareness programs for stu- dents. Grover School Future Farmers of America of 1939 are inviting former classmates and the public to attend a nostalgic reunion Sunday afternoon as they tour the 51-year old Grover Agriculture/Home Economics building which will be torn down this summer for new construction. Vernon Honeycutt of Albemarle, who organized the first FFA chap- _ter at Grover, and former agricul- ture teacher Dan Jones of Boiling Springs plan to attend. Other agri- culture teachers were M. C. Nix of Canton, E. W. Rochester and the late Paul Hambright of Grover. The committee organizing the event invite the public to share pic- tures and memorabilia. The Agriculture and Home Economics building and gymnasi- um will be open to the public for tours beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday. At 3 p. m. the planning committee will recognize teachers and other guests. Pictures will be made on the steps of the school building. Exchange Students Need Homes In KM From July 1-28, 10 French and Spanish students will need homes in the Kings Mountain area. They will be brought here by Nacel Cultural Exchanges, a non-profit organiza- tion specializing in four-week home stays. The students, who range in age from 13 to 18, are coming to experience American family life and to practice their English skills. All the participants are covered by medical and liability insurance, Host families "adopt" a student, who enjoys similar activities, and provides room, board and Carolina hospitality. The program prefers that host families correspond with the students prior to their arrival, but time is running out, and the need for additional host families is still great.
